About the Author
Robert Westall was born in 1929 on Tyneside, where he grew up during the Second World War. He studied Fine Art and Sculpture, and for many years taught in schools throughout the North of England. His first novel for children, THE MACHINE GUNNERS won the Carnegie Medal in 1975. He won it again in 1982 for THE SCARECROW (the first writer to win the medal twice), the Smarties Prize in 1989 for BLITZCAT, and the Guardian Award in 1991 for THE KINGDOM BY THE SEA. He died in 1993.

was great to reunite with Chas MaGill again

was great to reunite with Chas MaGill again, but why no mention of the orginal book, and more importantly, the adventures in it? zero, zilch, nada. none of the characters even allude to the unreal exploits of Chas and gang in the first book (of which I am a HUGE fan). Still a good read nonetheless, but thought it turned a bit political at the end.

The 'Best' World War 2 Book Around

The Fathom five is a thrilling story of a boy named Chas McGill who has found out about a spy living in his own town of Garmouth. He sets out to find the spy with his best friend Cemetary Jones who lives in the cemetary with his dad. Together they find a machine trapped on the sands of the river bank and find out that it can be used for morse code. This book is the sequal to the Machine Gunners also by Robert Westall.

Made you feel like you were really there

I found that this book really there. Not to mention that the suspense never stopped. But it end is really sad. You wont be able to put it down
