If you have been aware of the stem cell debate the past few years and have wondered what it means, Alice Park will fill the bill. Written for the general reader, The Stem Cell Hope: How Stem Cell Medicine Can Change Our Lives, brings the reader up to date while filling in the technical/historical details along the way. Profiles of pivotal researchers provides additional insight into the research philosophy and methodology. Importantly, Park details how we have moved far beyond embryonic stem cells over the past decade and unveils how other forms of stem cell research is leading to health care breakthroughs. She points out ethical problems researchers and clinical practitioners face in a balanced way. Stem cell research may ultimately prove to be only a partial answer to health disorders. i read this book as a primer for the topic area, stem cells. it provides a good overview of stem cells, what they are and some meaning of what you read behind the headlines. the author is credible,and has access to the leading researchers in the field, tells you what the researchers are actually doing right now and what they have done. it is an exciting topic, but we also need updates on what the most promising areas of breakthrough would be. for example, would like to know, (1) can this cure spinal cord injuries and when? (2) cure baldness? (3) pancreatic cancer? we need updates to each area that pertains to the topic. so read the book for a comprehensive update of the topic and well written, it will explain the scientific issues and terminology in something the average person can understand. a good read. recommend.

Excellent non-technical read on the stem cell debate

The Stem Cell Hope was a very enjoyable book to read. It reads like a novel on the timeline of political, scientific, and moral issues that have been raised over the issue of embryonic stem cells. There is not much in regards to the technical aspects, but that was not to be expected. The only thing I was slightly disappointed about was that Alice Park decided to ignore the promise of adult stem cells completely. Even in the preface, Alice makes it clear that this book does not cover any issues relating to adult stem cells.
