Gijsbert van den Brink, Ph.D. (1993), Utrecht University, holds the Chair for the Theology of Reformed Protestantism at the Protestant Theological University in Amsterdam and is Associate Professor of Christian Doctrine at the VU University Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published on historical and doctrinal issues within the Reformed tradition and beyond. Harro M. Hopfl, Ph.D. (1989), Lancaster University, was Research Professor (and is now Visiting Fellow) at the Essex Business School, Essex University, and is Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra. He has published many monographs and articles on the political theory of Calvin, the Calvinists, and the early Jesuits, and has also co-edited "Managing Modernity" (Oxford UP, 2011)."

Dr. Parsons taught at the university level for more than 20 years. She holds a doctorate in Educational Technology and was certified by the ICCP in 1995. Dr. Parsons began writing and creating educational software for Course Technology in 1992. She contributed to the Windows for Business and Illustrated Series and developed the New Perspectives, e-Course, and Practical series. She works via the Internet with a team of highly skilled media specialists and desktop publishers located in various states and provinces.

Informative book for beginners

I bought this book for a beginners class I had to take for college, and I have to say that this book is pretty awesome. It separates microsoft word, power point, excel, and access information, so its a smooth transition when your reading and learning. They also have questions and projects in the back to give you some practice. I don't know if all do - but mines did - come with a cd. The cd is the extra boost. It not only has the same notes as the book, it also makes it more interactive with u by having objects you can click and the tests at the end of the chapter. I would definitely recommend to a beginner or someone who needs to brush up on their microsoft abilities.

Mi pareja de 9 anos se abia abandonado y crei en ese momento que todo se derrumbaba pero gracias a esa amiga conoci de este gran autor. Tracing the mid-19th-century life stories of two sisters and two brothers "four extraordinary individuals" Perry (Conceived in Liberty) guides the reader along the passage from slavery to emancipation to equality. The sisters are Sarah and Angelina Grimk‚, daughters of a white, wealthy South Carolina planter (and slaveholder). They were brazen enough to reject their state's, family's and class's pro-slavery traditions, becoming two of the most prominent and famous champions of abolition. The brothers in this story are their nephews, black men, Archibald and Francis Grimk‚, born in slavery and equally bold, eventually continuing their aunts' work into the 1930s and transforming the crusade against slavery into a battle for equal rights, thus establishing the foundation for the civil rights movement. From Sarah's birth in 1792 to Francis's death in 1937, Perry recounts their histories. A chronology, brief sketches of the major characters and a thorough bibliography supplement the text. The historical background is deftly handled; while clarifying policies (the Missouri Compromise, the "gag rule"), people (William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. An inspiration to young women

Lift Up Thy Voice is a compelling tale of two sisters that will inspire young women to speak up and fight for what they believe. This book recounts the significant, yet often ignored role women played in the abolition of slavery. But beyond the facts of history I enjoyed reading the more personal story of the sisters and the effect their strong beliefs had on their personal lives. Even today having strong feminist views is not without its consequences, but these women spoke out at a time when women belonged their fathers and then to their husbands, rarely to themselves. Mark Perry has written an excellent and comprehensive history of this family and I would recommend it to readers interested in women's history as well as African American history.

Perry writes so well and gave an excellent account of life in Charleston at this time

I came across this book as a reference or footnote in some other book I was reading. I picked up a copy but expected so very little from it other than who the Grimke sisters were. What a shock I was in for.
This book is an incredible read; one I just could not put down. The author blends so well the story of the sisters and weaves into it the overall history of the abolitionist movement. Perry writes so well and gave an excellent account of life in Charleston at this time, along with discussion of the American Colonization Society, Quakers, the rise of the antislavery movement and the feminist movement tangenting off of it. I especially enjoyed getting to meet Theodore Dwight Weld, a name I had heard of but knew little of. Perry also explained well the schism between the abolitionist groups, mainly between the New York Reformers led by the Tappan brothers and the New England Garrisonians.
And just as the Civil War is ending and I felt the story was as well, Perry introduces two nephews of the Grimke sisters who grew up as slaves. He continues the book with their careers in the civil rights movement. Just incredible.
I know I am reading a great book when I have no idea as to what page I am on. The book just flows. This is the first Mark Perry book I have read and will now have to look at his other writings.

I agree with reviewer Dan E. Moldea who suggests that the film studios will line up behind this one. It's a wonderfully crafted story which makes you feel you are inside the story. Kudos to author Mark Perry. He is a wonderfully talented story teller.

An Eye Opener

If you have been aware of the stem cell debate the past few years and have wondered what it means, Alice Park will fill the bill. Written for the general reader, The Stem Cell Hope: How Stem Cell Medicine Can Change Our Lives, brings the reader up to date while filling in the technical/historical details along the way. Profiles of pivotal researchers provides additional insight into the research philosophy and methodology. Importantly, Park details how we have moved far beyond embryonic stem cells over the past decade and unveils how other forms of stem cell research is leading to health care breakthroughs. She points out ethical problems researchers and clinical practitioners face in a balanced way. Stem cell research may ultimately prove to be only a partial answer to health disorders. It may be found to be a dead end street in time. Until that time, Park has provided a good foundation for understanding what is taking place.

i read this book as a primer for the topic area, stem cells. it provides a good overview of stem cells, what they are and some meaning of what you read behind the headlines. the author is credible,and has access to the leading researchers in the field, tells you what the researchers are actually doing right now and what they have done. it is an exciting topic, but we also need updates on what the most promising areas of breakthrough would be. for example, would like to know, (1) can this cure spinal cord injuries and when? (2) cure baldness? (3) pancreatic cancer? we need updates to each area that pertains to the topic. so read the book for a comprehensive update of the topic and well written, it will explain the scientific issues and terminology in something the average person can understand. a good read. recommend.

Excellent non-technical read on the stem cell debate

The Stem Cell Hope was a very enjoyable book to read. It reads like a novel on the timeline of political, scientific, and moral issues that have been raised over the issue of embryonic stem cells. There is not much in regards to the technical aspects, but that was not to be expected. The only thing I was slightly disappointed about was that Alice Park decided to ignore the promise of adult stem cells completely. Even in the preface, Alice makes it clear that this book does not cover any issues relating to adult stem cells.
