Grade 1–3—This popular folk song, which is also the anthem of the United Farm Workers of America, celebrates the arrival of spring and the connectedness of humankind. Diaz's joyful pictures bring the words to life. Rendered in acrylic, colored pencil, and pencil, the vibrant, fanciful artwork features flying and floating people as well as giant-sized roosters, chickens, and birds. The stylized humans, with various skin tones and multicolored eyes, show unity and love through linking arms and large colorful hearts that adorn their clothing. Presented in Spanish and English, each line is illustrated on an expansive spread. Piano music and historical information about the song are included. Because only two verses are illustrated, the book seems short, but it's a visual delight that's sure to be frequently requested.—Barbara Katz, Parish Episcopal School, Dallas, TX

Diaz illustrates the first two verses of the familiar Spanish folk song “De Colores,” celebrating the arrival of spring inwords and musicinfused with an all-encompassingspirit ofcommunityand joy. Each double-page spread illustrates one line of the lyrics, which appearin Spanish and in English. Piano music is appended along with a brief history of the song. Created in acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil, the fanciful artwork features people tumbling through the air and flying with the birds in the first verse and, in the second, cavorting with chicks that become nearly human-size. The characters’ simplified bodies, stylized faces, and clothing emblazoned with large hearts give them a look more archetypal than representational. Time and again, the forms of these figures echo shapes and colors in the natural world around them, underscoring their delight in the coming of spring. Created in surprisingly subdued colors, this picture book offers a fine, resonant representation of the song’s words and warmth. Preschool-Grade 3. --Carolyn Phelan

Very good picture book, but.....
By Neal Reynolds
Well, I do have a couple of criticisms of this as a book for 6-8 year olds. First, the colors aren't the bright ones that make such a book a favorite for the child. Secondly, the Spanish/English translation isn't accurate.

Even so, I definitely think this is a good child's book because of the idea in back of it. The English words evoke a beautiful picture, and actually the Spanish words also do, but a somewhat different picture. The reader should be told that the translation isn't precise. However, with help from parent, the child can increase his or her Spanish understanding.

The same goes for a Spanish speaking child...the book can be used to enhance English speaking skills as long as the reader knows the translation is very loose.

This is a beautiful artistic rendition of the Spanish folk song, De Colores ...
By Deb
The moon smiles as it watches over the Earth below. Men tumble along the ground in the mountains and colorful birds fly above them. Bees and butterflies flit through the skies underneath a colorful rainbow. "'De colores," / bright with colors the rainbow brings joy / with the glory of spring. / And a bright love has found us / with peace all around us / that makes our hearts sing." Even the red rooster comes alive with song joining the others who lift their heads high as they combine their voices. Everyone holds hands as they cluster around the hen. She too, sings a song of joy and then her chicks join in. "Po, po, po, po, p." The whole world sings of love and peace.

Y por eso los grandes amores
de muchos colores me gustan
a m.

And a bright love has found us
with peace all around us
that makes our hearts sing.

"De Colores" (Made of Colors) is an age-old Spanish folk song that is given a new artistic twist with David Diaz's distinctive artwork. The characters, both people and animals, tumble through the pages bringing the verse alive. The Spanish version is on the left-hand page of the book while the English is on the right. Although this song has been used as an "anthem of the United Farm Workers of America" and sung by the likes of Joan Baez, the lively tune is much loved by children as well. The music in the back of the book can be enlarged and played. This is a beautiful bilingual book that would be a perfect compliment to a musical circle or storytime!

Great song turned into an illustrated book
By Joseph Dewey
[[VIDEOID:mo2LOC8QZESYR1]]I thought this was a book that taught you the colors in Spanish, but I was very wrong. There are no colors in this book, because it's actually a traditional Spanish song for migrant farm workers. It's a unifying song of the people.

This book is the whole song, in both English and Spanish. Each page of the book is a different line of the song. You can either get the music off the internet to sing along, or the book also has the sheet music to the song, if you're good at an instrument.

It's a fun song for the whole family to sing along. And singing this song always sounds great, even if you think you're a bad singer. The illustrations in this book are also very beautiful. I recommend this book to everyone, and I'm definitely going to be requesting this song the next time I'm at a restaurant with mariachis.

Pros:
+Great version of the song "De Colores"
+You can sing along to this song, no matter what your singing ability is
+Beautiful illustrations

Cons:
-Won't teach you any colors
