Fantastic F/F/M story!

First read by this author and I seriously loved it! There just isn’t enough really good erotica out there featuring F/F/M combos and Donna Jay completely supplied it!

Jen and Brett are looking forward to a relaxing weekend getaway of camping. While handing out by the river they get a little touchy feely on each other until they are interrupted by Kylie who is looking for her dog that ran through the bushes towards the river. Jen and Brett have always fantasized about having another woman and when she shows up after they’ve just gotten their motors revved, they can’t help but look at her with some lust. The moment is quickly gone, however, when Kylie retrieves her dog and sets back to her little cottage in hopes of having not ruined the nice couples obvious plans.

Hearing some crazy barking, Jen and Brett go to investigate and find Kylie being harassed by a couple younger guys who are hitting on her and trying to get her to come with them. Brett saves the day and Jen and Brett offer Kylie a ride home so she doesn’t have to worry about running into them again.

Jen and Brett participate in some harmless flirting with Kylie until Kylie finally jumps across the line they’ve all been coming close to, but not quite crossing themselves. After all, Brett and Jen may have fantasized about such an experience but neither has been in the situation before and don’t know how to proceed. Kylie tells Jen and Brett that she has been a third before and enjoys it and asks them if they have as well. When she finds out they’ve not had this experience before, she does what she can to take some of the lead so they can relax and enjoy.

I really appreciated that Kylie had her boundaries of no penetration unless she’s in a committed relationship with the man. This makes all parties feel better as there are clear lines that won’t be crossed which will allow them to, hopefully, come out of the situation on the other side having been fully satiated but not jealous, stressed-out or worried. The actual threesome scene was super-hot and more realistic as to how a married couple and a total stranger would react in this kind of scene (at least in my opinion), and I really liked Kylie’s idea of how the three of them could have the experience together, at the same time, but without anyone’s boundaries actually being crossed.

I would consider this a HEA in my own opinion but others might feel differently. Let me just say I thought it more realistic and I really enjoyed it. I felt like their experience will be more treasured this way.

Highly recommended for fans of F/F/M combos in their erotica.

A Zipperless Dream

Although not an exact match, Riverside Surprise is in many ways the quintessential "zipless f*ck" that Erica Jong's book Fear of Flying described. Riverside has the quality of an erotic dream, a mystical first FF and FMF encounter for the happy wife/heroine of this novella. The storu is the creation, in words, of how many people might imagine how their first such sexual encounter would take place.

I'm going out on a limb and speculating that many people's - both men and women's - very first imaginary creation of a sexual encounter - 'wet dream' if you want to be crass (dreamt while they are still na�ve and inexperienced) is with an imaginary partner with a bit more experience, who is willing to take the lead, but who is nevertheless thrilled to couple with you, the dreamer, the newbie. Certainly, my young man's dream was of such a woman to tutor and enthrall me.

What I like so much about Riverside Surprise is that it evokes that dream for the wife, who gets her zipless f*ck in the form of her very first FF sex, and her first m�nage. By "like" I mean it evoked the whole dream-like experience for me, a guy, who will never have a first FF experience. The words were that lush.

About the Author

David M. Buss received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkley in 1981. He began his career in academics at Harvard, later moving to the University of Michigan before accepting his current position as Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas. His primary research interests include human sexuality, mating strategies, conflict between the sexes, homicide, stalking, and sexual victimization. The author of more than 200 scientific articles and 6 books, Buss has won numerous awards including the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology (1988), the APA G. Stanley Hall Lectureship (1990), the APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer Award (2001), and the Robert W. Hamilton Book Award (2000) for the first edition of Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind. He is also the editor of the first comprehensive Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology (2005, Wiley). He enjoys extensive cross-cultural research collaborations and lectures widely within the United States and abroad.

A thorough, but uncritical, overview

If one reads Buss' text in a certain manner, there is a lot to say about it. It's organized by evolutionary challenge (survival, mating, parenting, group living), exploring how adaptations to each of these challenges might explain human behavior. The general approach is a survey of the literature. Thus on survival, the reader is introduced to hypotheses about the adaptive value of our taste for meat, sweetness, bitterness, spice, alcohol, how these tastes change during pregnancy, and how our attempts to gather food (e.g. hunting) shaped our species (e.g. male-female spatio-temporal differences and group dynamics). Common human phobias (e.g. spiders, heights) are explained in terms of adaptive fitness. While much of this may seem obvious, it is difficult to fault a textbook for explaining the basics of its field. Buss then introduces the evolutionary theory of senescence to answer the question 'why do people die?', and then most speculatively introduces hypotheses about the adaptive value of suicide. Again, if read in a certain way, as an overview of the literature, this book has a value. But don't expect much critical thinking from Buss. He seems predisposed to think that all human behavior is adaptive. While one can certainly imagine how suicide may help one's genetic fitness in certain instances, there is a big leap from this observation to suggesting a heritable mechanism upon which one can decide to advantageously end one's life. Given the high rate of physically healthy teen suicide, an adaptive hypothesis to explain this behavior seems farfetched.

On sex and mating, Buss reviews the psychological literature of mate preference, capably arguing that gender differences are due to evolutionary asymmetry, as opposed to competing hypotheses (e.g. structural societal differences drive women's mate preference). The chapters on kinship are dominated by further explorations of sexual asymmetry as well as the influential theories of Hamilton and Trivers. Moving on to social matters, Buss discuses reciprocal altruism, aggression, warfare, sexual aggression, and status. Again, it is a solid overview, but where it loses value is in its lack of critical assessment of the theories proposed. Evolutionary psychology has been wrongly attacked by many as a collection of unscientific, post hoc, rationalizations. It has also been criticized (e.g. by Gould) as attempting to explain too much of human behavior as adaptive. As such, a text on the matter should do more to contest these notions. Instead, Buss feeds right into them, with uncritical examinations of the evidence in favor of his favored hypotheses (contrasting with his criticism of non-evolutionary theories). In general, this book fails to adequately examine non-evolutionary theories, is uncritical of questionable methodologies (e.g. self reports), and is far too ready to accept dubious interpretations of correlations. But again, if you can keep all this in mind, and read with a critical eye, this book is a nice overview of the field.

Review for the second edition (2003).

The text I have is the second edition from 2003. Given that the field is relatively new, I suspect the newest edition has expanded a lot on the earlier ones. I give the book four stars because it is a good textbook, but Buss seems to be stretching things out to get to 30 pages in several of the chapters, even going so far as to say the same thing and cite the same studies in different chapters. It was a very easy to read text and was actually very similar to my "Animal Behavior" text by Alcock, and in fact, I would say that is a better text than this one for understanding evolutionary psychology. Again, I suspect later editions of "Evolutionary Psychology" have more human specific papers to cite than the 2003 edition (which relied heavily on animal studies), but I don't know.

Overall a decent text and highly insightful for anyone new to the field.

Very valuable for a strong foundation

If you are new to EvPsy, then this book is quite useful and informative. However, if you seek philosophical debates and analyses in this controversial field, you will be disappointed. I liked the book a lot because while I have read a lot on Darwinian evolution, evolutionary psychology is a a new subject for me.

A great book and must read for everyone who cares about India and its future. The book is beautifully set with engaging story-line and in-depth analysis. There is an enormous amount of research and analysis that has gone behind the book and you can feel it when you read it. All the data and analysis is beautifully presented through a very simple to understand language and story.

In the knowledge economy, war between nations will be fought in classrooms. India is singularly unprepared for it. Shail Kumar's book, “Building Golden Indiafocuses on the issues plaguing India's higher education and charts out a set of urgent solutions to reform it.

Shail has done admirable research - from combing through the thousands of pages of national and state level committee reports and numerous books published on this topic, to conducting over a hundred interviews with entrepreneurs, corporate executives, faculty members, university leaders, students, and young professionals in India and across four continents. Shail himself has a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and an MBA from Indiana University. He has also been an administrator at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

The first part of the book makes for a depressing reading. It dissects India's higher education and shows how it is in a crisis and broken on all fronts that matter. With 20-26 million children born per year in India, it is an important and urgent issue. Further, in the next 35-50 years, India must educate and prepare 700 million to 1.3 billion young men and women for their lives and careers. Yet, it is disconnected from the needs and aspirations of the students, parents, society, industry, and nation.

It's in the second part that his optimism and passion becomes uplifting and infectious. He makes a case that India can do it. Creating, and drawing from, case studies of Nalanda University (from 2000 years back), the United States (at a national level), California (state level), UC Berkeley (public university), and Stanford University (private university), Shail comes up with a series of action items, foremost of which can be summarized as follows:

Scope and scale matters: Nalanda had fifteen hundred teachers and three thousand to ten thousand students. Adjusted for inflation, the top universities in the world operate on similar scales. With scope and scale comes depth and breadth of fields that are available to the students as a choice. What does this mean for India's higher education roadmap?

Universal access and excellent education is not a pipe dream; it's an achievable goal. If others can do it, so can we. Our Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education (percentage of students in higher education) is a measly 20%. We need to raise it to at least 50% over the next decade.

Public and private colleges and research universities can co-exist with community colleges and vocational schools. The California blueprint is an excellent one to follow.

Most importantly, we should put an end to single field institutions like engineering, medicine or nursing in our higher education. We need large scale integrated, research universities to make a serious impact. Such research oriented universities will offer students the choice to pursue different subjects and will facilitate inter-disciplinary collaboration on research, while bringing down the cost of real estate, equipment and facilities.

Excellence matters. Excellence and making an impact have to be deeply ingrained in the culture of our higher education. They are habits. They are parts of the DNA. The processes and incentives need to be aligned to sustain this culture. Outstanding teachers, moral standards, intellectual rigor, and mental discipline are foundations for excellence. Reputation and financial support will follow. How does one breed excellence?

Allow universities the freedom to attract and retain the best faculty members. Great institutions like UC Berkeley are established on the shoulders of faculty members who are experts in their respective fields and who are deeply committed to the mission of the university. The government should not impose any restrictions.

Remove hurdles – be it institutions like UGC, AICTE and MCI, or be it archaic laws like pegging the salary of professors to that of IAS officers and school teachers.

Let the universities compete for students, faculty and financial resources. This will help them focus on learning experience, use of technology, governance, quality and collaboration with industry.

Education, says Shail, is the key to unleashing the potential of India's 1.3 billion people and building a Golden India for all. Higher education, which sits at a critical junction of the society and nation, is the master key. Well prepared professionals in all walks of lives and a thriving research, innovation, and entrepreneurship ecosystem can unleash India's vast potential, address its mega challenges, and make its environment and economy more vibrant and sustainable.

fun days! These are days when math comes to ...

We are almost finished with Book 4. I have to say this has been the math that has "clicked" for my daughter! Most math books have cluttered pages. My daughter sees a sea of numbers and shuts down. This one is not overwhelming. There is a story line throughout the book that keeps my little girl eagerly awaiting the next lesson. And on top of that there are, what we call, fun days! These are days when math comes to life. Lessons which include going on a scavenger hunt for objects which have the same shapes she is learning about. I have to admit finding a nonagon was not a success, but it was fun and she learned the shape. Then there are cooking days, shopping days, measurement days. How is this for real life: make a menu using a cook book for recipes, go shopping for ingredients, then cook. The child gets planning, addition, subtraction, factions and cooking all in a very practical way. Square footage is taught buy drawing your home's floor plan and then measuring all rooms. Again in a very practical setting, the child is learning perimeter and area. The way fractions, decimals, and percents are taught as being the same thing is pure genius! The charts which you print and laminate (or cover with contact paper or page protectors) makes working some problems with dry erase more enjoyable than just working in the workbook. I have only two issues, but they are easily overcome and the good outweighs the not so good by a long shot. 1) For math where it is hard for the child to remember how to do, such as long division, there is not enough practice. I would prefer just a tad bit more in this area, so I add about 2 problems every now and then. 2) In this book the fraction cards your child is supposed to measure out and cut is quite difficult. I decided to measure and draw them myself and let daughter cut them out. One set was so complicated that I needed a special ruler to accomplish. Having said that, the last set can be done without if you wish. These would be better off provided as a printable. Okay, long story short: if you have a child who learns best with real life, shuts down with pages and pages of numbers, enjoys a good story, then MLFLE may be just the math you want! We are very grateful for it and wish there were more levels than 5.

Susan P. Halpern is a social worker and psychotherapist. She is the founder of the New York Cancer Help Program and a staff associate at the Commonweal Cancer Help Program. She lives with her husband, near their children and grandchildren in Berkeley, California. This is her first book.

Don't buy this book if you are a Christian. You will be sadly disappointed.

As a born again Christian I was disappointed to read so many glowing reviews of this book. Consider yourself warned, the author speaks of universal healing energy and the universal spirit. She also discusses a healing circle with an altar in the center. She's big on chanting and meditation. When she discusses prayer she mentions positive thoughts, saying thanks to the universe that brought us together. On page 135 she quotes Meg speaking to a paralyzed woman who wanted to die and Meg's answer was "That is always a choice." "Meg gave here the freedom to find her own way and live." But I thought to myself what if she had chosen to find her own way and kill herself? The book comes across as saying don't try to talk someone out of it. Susan speaks of reassuring children that illness is fate. On page 197 the author quotes from a PBS special of a terminally ill man keeping pills in a drawer so that he could choose when to die. The author does not condemn that behavior. This is a direct quote from the author: "Sometimes when I think of a sick friend, instead of worrying and tensing up, I will send him or her a prayer. Some of you may call it a positive thought." And I think to myself who are you praying to? The sick person? Why don't you just call on the power of Almighty God to heal your friend? The universe doesn't heal -- God does. Not once in the entire book does she mention Jesus Christ, the son of God. But she mentions prayer wheels, meditation, chanting, and positive thoughts etc quite often. I wanted to write a review that I wish I had read before I bought the book. It deals with cancer, terminal illness, hospice,chronic illness, mental illness and more. I cannot imagine facing any of these without a firm faith in a loving God who promises us an eternal life of bliss after this hard, hard life is over if we just put our faith in His son Jesus and repent of our sins.

An excellent book to learn what nobody ever speaks about

My friend was dying from pancreatic cancer and she called me with great excitement in finding this book! "Nobody knows what to say to me, they should all read this book, then they won't be afraid!", my dear friend said. I downloaded the book, and learned Nancy was right. The information in this book is invaluable, a pleasant and interesting read, and it made things easier to discuss knowing what and how to communicate honestly. Each person's experience will be different, but our love for those going through such difficult times is the same and this fabulous book will be your guide. Don't hesitate, I'm grateful to have read it.

This memoir follows Olga as she splits herself into "parts" and develops dissociative identity disorder to cope with the abuse, and then struggles to merge these parts and overcome the disorder in adulthood.

About the Author

Olga R. Trujillo is an attorney who works with communities on issues involving domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and the impact of trauma. A nationally renowned speaker, she has appeared in several training videos on domestic violence, including Cut It Out and A Survivor’s Story. She has received the Bud Cramer Leadership Award from the National Children’s Alliance and the Sunshine Lady Foundation Peace Award. Olga lives with her partner Casey, dogs, and cats on a small farm in Wisconsin.

Highly Recommended

Ms. Trujillo has truly written a tour de force in her ground breaking book The Sum of My Parts. She gives us an unflinching account of the childhood abuse she experienced at the hands of her parents and siblings. Her story is compelling. She tells it in a raw and honest manner, yet without gratuitous or sensational detail. Just as important is the story of her hard fought recovery. This is an informative and inspirational book, especially for those abused as children or who work with this population. This quintessential book is a must read for survivors, loved ones of survivors, those who work with survivors or anyone seeking to increase their understanding of this phenomena.

The Sum of My Parts

For personal reasons, I started reading this book at Chapter 8. It is truly captivating regardless of your start point. When I was ready, I read the book cover to cover without stopping... and then I read it again.

While reading "The Sum of My Parts", Olga Trujillo--at the tender age of three-- immediately became my hero. She endured horrific abuse at the hands of people that should have been trusted family members. This is an amazingly incredible, haunting read and one that I will surely never forget. Her memoir takes the reader from the depths of an emotional pit, one that you think she couldn't possibly survive, and she ends her book with an uplifting and final message of hope. From a healing standpoint, reading this book is quite possibly the best decision I have made.

Olga's book details her life of abuse at the hands of her father, brothers and outside perpetrators and chronicles the events to present time. She endured a life of abuse, panic, agoraphobia and consequently DID. Olga has gone on to become an accomplished attorney, advocate and author.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Olga recently and I can say that I am truly amazed and humbled at the person she has become as a result of abuse of this magnitude.

Please, if you are an advocate for childhood abuse, a teacher, a parent or a survivor...this book is a must read. Thank you, Olga, for shedding light on this subject and educating us on DID. You are my hero.

A mind-blowing eye-opener!

I met Olga when she came to our city as a presenter at one of our domestic violence seminars. I knew she was an amazing woman from attending some of her sessions, but I have been waiting for her book to be published to learn more. I could not put this book down. Olga's account of her childhood abuse is heartwrenching...it is very hard to think about the things that happened to her as an innocent little child. There is no wonder she had to dissociate herself from the horrific abuse in order to survive. The miracle is that Olga survived with only the support and love she was blessed with by people outside her family. I work with survivors of violent crimes,as an advocate, on a daily basis and I thought I knew how important it is to empower the survivors. Olga's book really illustrates how empowering every kind word and encouragement is to a person who lives in an abusive home. Thank you, Olga, for baring your soul to the world in order to encourage other survivors and educate those of us who work in this field. I hope Olga writes another book to answer the questions I still have about her recovery process.
