Just as the Sherman tank was the quintessential 'American tank' in WWII, the M48A3 Patton tank was the most prominent US battle tank during the Vietnam War years of the 1960s and 1970s. The US Marines, who arrived in Vietnam with M48A3s in March 1965, were the first American forces to bring tanks to Vietnam. Close on their heels came the US Army, with its Patton s in October 1965. The Marines then introduced a flame throwing version of the M48A3, namely the M67A2. Beginning in July 1971 the US began supplying M48A3 tanks to the South Vietnamese army in line with President Richard Nixon's commitment to the Vietnamization of the war. Although the 52-ton Patton had been received with some skepticism when it was introduced it possessed features that proved well adapted to combat conditions in Southeast Asia. The thick armor of the M48A3 protected crewmen from Viet-Cong mines, and the vehicle's sheer mass enabled it to force its way through thick jungle vegetation. Illustrated with 109 photos, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings; 48 pages.

Photo-Guide to the M-48 Patton in Action!

The Patton tank - more, specifically the M48A3 model - is indeliably linked to the Vietnam War. Though initially U.S. military leaders didn't think tanks could operate in Vietnam, the need for armor support and the Patton's demonstrated ability to function in the Southeast Asia setting meant the 52-ton metal monster was soon a vital player in the fighting. David Doyle and Squadron/Signal offer up a 48-page photo-tribute to the Patton in M48A3 IN VIETNAM IN ACTION, #46 in the S/S 'Armor' series.
Doyle's book features over 100 - mostly color - photographs of U.S. Army, USMC and ARVN Pattons busting jungle, lending fire support, under repair, etc. There are many close-up detail shots along with general 'in action' pix. It's a wonderful and varied collection of images. What is especially striking is how the various crews 'customized' their mounts with extra gear, track links, weapons, etc.
Curiously there are no side-profiles by Don Greer although he does supply the front/book cover artwork.
'Heavy metal' tank buffs and those interested in the Vietnam war should find M48A3 IN VIETNAM IN ACTION a colorful, informative overview of the Patton at war. Recommended

Well done.
A side of armour warfare often neglected in this format.
Loads of colour photos, and information about the M-48 I havn't seen before.
Great for the scale modeler/diorama builder.
The lack of the usual "center-fold" colour plates is more than made up for the photos and written commentary.
