About the Author
Herbert L. Petri is a Professor at Towson University, where he has been recognized on five separate occasions for his excellent teaching. He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Johns Hopkins University, teaching the Motivation course since 1986. Dr. Petri has studied the role of physiological, behavioral, and cognitive mechanisms of motivation, memory, and learning for more than 35 years. His research has led to published articles on the underlying circuitry of memory, drug actions on learning and memory, and reviews of motivational processes. He received his B.A. degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University.

John M. Govern is a Professor at Towson University, where he has taught since 1989. His primary research interest is in social cognition. He earned a B.S. in Psychobiology from Albright College and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Temple University.

Great comprehensive book

First of all this is a textbook and it reads like a textbook. If you're looking for a book that makes things easy and has just the highlights this might not be the book for you. If you're looking for a book that's a primer on motivation and motivation theory it's a great book. Especially valuable in a large number of references to prior research. The authors do a great job of explaining the basics, current theories, strengths of and arguments against these theories.

Born on the Isle of Man and linked over the years with Cambridge, Harvard and Columbia Universities, Kermode belongs to the superleague of internationally famous old-school literary critics that also includes Harold Bloom, Geoffrey Hartman and Christopher Ricks; his best-known works in America include The Sense of an Ending, Shakespeare's Language and an autobiography, Not Entitled. This hefty and very worthwhile collection samples his interests from opera to modern dance, from the New Testament to the English novelist Ian McEwan. It includes chapters from Kermode's most famous books, freestanding academic pieces and lectures, essay-reviews from the London Review of Books, and four substantial unpublished essays, including a provocative exploration of literary and cognitive "forgetting." Kermode's recurring subjects include Shakespeare, Wallace Stevens, Joseph Conrad, modern fiction and narrative generally, and the nature of interpretation. If his most theoretical work seems very much of its time (the 1970s and '80s), the work on novels, poems and plays stands up quite well, exhibiting Kermode's blend of sophisticated reading and consistently accessible writing. "Shakespeare and Boito" (a new piece) compares the original Othello to the one in Verdi's opera; "The Man in the Macintosh" (1979) asks Joyceans, and New Testament readers, "why do we prefer enigmas to muddles?" Kermode can simply observe, or ask questions, rather than advancing extended arguments, a way of reading that proves as instructive as it is satisfying.

Fresh, sharp, at ease

Kermode's collection of essays demonstrates a brilliant mind scanning the diverse subjects to which it was led by curiosity and passion. As a literary critic, Kermode is an exemplar of the creative possibilities of theory-- rather than operating in one single mode, he adopts freely as he sees fit from a range of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. These essays prove the value in a commitment to following personal interests rather than fashionable academic mandates and to wearing critical perspectives as a mask: for the sake of entertainment, flashes of enlightenment, and personal freedom. With a passion for literature, and for thinking about literature's bearing upon itself, Kermode writes beautifully and clearly. He carries literature beyond its own formal bounds, without subordinating it to 'larger', 'more serious' concerns (such as Philosophy, Politics or History) though acknowleding its interactions with these disciplines. More specifically, Kermode shows a consistent concern with hermeneutics and narrative as code, returning again and again to an interest in the New Testament that appears even before his well-known "The Genesis of Secrecy".

It's beautifully fitting that this collection of Kermode's essays begins with "Poet and Dancer Before Diaghilev." Kermode moves with balletic grace and alacrity through subjects ranging from Parisian salon culture of the '20s to Don DeLillo, often using the written word (Yeats, Stevens) as a point of departure for further critical and cultural adventuring. Pieces of My Mind is a pure pleasure from start to finish -- a generous testament to Sir Kermode's love and wonder for many, many things.

This guy can write so well, but this book is a relatively boring amalgam of essays, mostly about nothing of real interest. There's some great Kermode writing, but not much of it is to be found here.

Much of the violence that characterized Reconstruction was directly associated with the Negro militia movement organized by Radical politicians to support their precarious regimes in Southern states. This book is the story of that ill-fated movement, a story with important implication for later times.

Most Southern whites did not disguise their hostility toward the governments that were imposed on their states after Reconstruction entered its Radical phase. and Radical leaders lived in constant fear that this hostility would flare into open revolt. Organization of a loyal protective force was imperative if they were to remain in power.

Although planned originally as a defensive force, the Negro militia was quickly used by the Radicals for such purposes as controlling elections. The resentment of Southern whites resulting from this political activity was aggravated by crimes of violence, depredations, and minor social offenses committed by some of the militiamen. However, the white Southerner’s fundamental enmity toward the Negro militia stemmed from the racial implications of a policy that armed the Negroes and placed them in positions of authority over white men.

At first, opposition to the Negro militia movement took the form of legal stratagems and other measures short of force, but the final blow to the Negro militia was dealt by white volunteer rifle companies— illegal, armed counterforces that were at the very core of the White Line movement. The race riot as a political technique was born, the most notorious riot occurring at Hamburg, South Carolina, where, the author states, the policy of “disbandment through extermination” was successfully employed. Disintegration of the entire movement was inevitable.

“It is ironic,” Singletary states, “that the organization of this protective force, because of its racial implications, actually aided in the destruction of the very thing it was created to protect.”

Before its publication, Negro Militia and Reconstruction won the Moncado Prize, a cash award made biennially by the American Military Institute for “the best original book-length manuscript in any field of United States Military history.”

This is a good book to be used as a reference for A and P especially if you find textbooks a little too much to read. This book is great for anatomy and physiology students in college. The info is given in a concise, but informative matter. The material in this book is easy to study from. However, I also used the following books which are also available on amazon.com:

A must for anyone interested in health and fitness!

I purchased this book to both review and enhance my knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I was most impressed by the step-by-step organization of the material. The self tests are easy to follow and understand. As a personal trainer, I highly (make that strongly) recommend this book for anyone interested in bettering their understanding of the structures within the human body.

HELPFUL, but not the best!

I ordered this book because I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology class at my high school. I figured that it could probably help me understand some things better if I could have another source other than the book that I already use. It didn't fail me. This book basically went in just about the same order as my school book, and it provided me with in depth, yet practical, information about certain topics that I really couldn't comprehend from my teacher. It has a lot of good diagrams, and it explains the chemical processes of the body nicely. If you are in a class of this sort, I would advise you to get this book. It could really help you out if you just read it.

A great teacher!

This is a great book and very well written. Although the title is a little misleading, it does deliver on its promise.

By the time you complete the 24 one-hour lessons you will be creating great websites. I have purchased several web programs and books in the past but still always felt intimidated by the process of creating a website. When things worked, I gave a sigh of relief and chalked it up to luck. When they didn't work, I spent days or weeks trying to fix the problem and pulling my hair out (no easy task when you don't have much to start with). Thanks to Expression Web 4 and this wonderful book and his videos (purchased separately) I feel confident in what I am doing for the first time.

Expression Web 4 is my primary web development tool. Since upgrading to Windows 10 the tool that I was using was no longer compatible with the OS. This book has quickly fill the gaps and solved every issue that I've had, Eespecially the Ftp config. issues that I were showing successful but not updating the web pages on the website.

A good book but could have been better

After going through the first 13 chapters, I was thinking this is really worth a full five stars. Some of these chapters will take a lot longer than an hour, though, if you work through the exercises. And working through the step-by-step exercises in the chapters is the only way to learn the functionality of Expression Web 4. By the way, a good way to work through the exercises is to use the free online edition from Safari - free, that is, if you buy the book. (From the online edition you can print out the steps and follow them in your Expression Web program.)

Chapter 14 is pivotal. It brings much of the material learned in the previous chapters into play as you complete the website project. You can see what the finished project should look like in the book. It's beautiful. But I couldn't bring all the material together even though I tried four different times - many, many hours of total frustration. Perhaps I was doing something wrong but my suspicion is that the mess in this chapter is the author's fault. But if the fault was mine, I hope that some reviewer will tell me. I gave my best effort here and couldn't put it all together.

No one, however, should be dissuaded by my lukewarm three-star review. There is a lot of valuable material in this book. But it's not for a beginner even though Morten Rand-Hendriksen writes in the Introduction: "As a result, this book is written with the novice designer in mind." The novice is likely to get bogged down after the first few chapters and not complete the book.

A classic western

For many years the 1968 Gregory Peck western, "The Stalking Moon" has been a favorite of mine. So when I recently saw this volume in a used book store, I picked it up, and I'm glad I did. Theodore V. Olsen was a very fine writer. This novel, first published in 1965 is lean and well-paced, and slowly ratchets up the tension in a manner reminiscent of John D. MacDonald's "The Executioners/Cape Fear."

The plot is set in Arizona and New Mexico of 1883. Sam Vetch is an army scout whose job is to help keep the Apaches on the reservation at San Carlos, AZ. While tracking a reservation-jumping band of Apaches, Vetch's patrol captures a group of women and children who've been left behind by hurrying braves. In this group they find a captive white woman who has two half-breed children with her. This was Vetch's last patrol, and he draws his pay and heads back to his ranch in Northern New Mexico. The commanding officer asks him to accompany the white woman, Sarah Carver, during the first part of her journey, and he agrees. Vetch had been courting a woman in a boom mining town in Arizona, and had planned to propose to her at the end of his army hitch, but when she turns him down, on a whim he asks Sarah to marry him and go back to his ranch in New Mexico. She agrees, but warns him that her Apache husband will come after the children. Vetch thinks it is absurdly unlikely that a lone Apache will find them at a remote ranch in a far off territory, and marries her without hesitation. Eventually, it becomes clear that "Salvaje" is coming, and is leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.

The movie followed the basic outline of the book, but there is much more about things like: 1) the very harsh and pervasive prejudice against half-breeds, "squaw men" (white men who take indian wives), and white women who have born indian children, even against their will as captives, 2) the indian ways that Sarah Carver has internalized during her 9 year captivity, 3) the fact that Sarah's 8-year old son has already effectively had his character molded as an Apache, and regards Vetch as the enemy. Oh, and Salveje is even more deadly and fearsome in the novel than he was in the movie. You can't go wrong with this classic western novel.

A different western full of heart, common sense, courage

A good story with a different plot. Realistic both in content and emotions of the people. This is not a sugar coated western but one with realism in the way Sam reacts both to his wife and the threat against both of them. I highly recommend it.

The Stalking Moon

I saw the movie on the Western Channel and thought it was great. Therefore, I decided to read the book to see what the real story happened to be as compared to the movie. The book is very good but somewhat different from the movie. I really liked both.
