About the Author
Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, also known as Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D., had an extensive background in Eastern and Western medicine. In 1955, after years of practicing and teaching medicine and surgery in his native India, he came to the West for further research and advanced medical studies. In the years that followed, he served as a resident physician at leading university hospitals in the United States and Canada.
In 1958, Dr. Mishra (Shri Brahmananda) founded the Yoga Society of New York, Inc. In 1966 he gave up his medical career to concentrate on his spiritual teaching, founding ashrams and centers of meditation and learning in the United States, Canada and Europe. His two leading centers today are Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York (opened in 1964 as the country retreat center for the Yoga Society of New York) and Brahmananda Ashram (founded in 1973 at the Yoga Society of San Francisco, Inc.). Year-round courses and programs are offered at both locations in all aspects of Yoga, in Sanskrit, East-West dance, music, drama, the arts, natural healing and related subjects.
Shri Brahmananda was a widely recognized scholar and authority on the ancient Sanskrit scriptures of Yoga and Vedanta. He is author of Fundamentals of Yoga, The Textbook of Yoga Psychology (on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras), Self Analysis and Self Knowledge (based on Shankaracharya's Atma Bodha), modern translations of several Upanishads and other classical Sanskrit scriptures, as well as many essays, stories and unpublished manuscripts. Much of his teaching also exists on audio and video recording.
Shri Brahmananda's life was dedicated to the integration of ancient and modern, Eastern and Western science, culture and philosophy for transformation, Self-realization and universal peace through spiritual unity. He left his body in September 1993, yet his spiritual presence continues to pervade his ashrams and his timeless teachings remain a source of inspiration and guidance for all. A treatise on the yoga sutras of Potanjulis

An erudide examination of the pannani's treatise on the transformation of mind; a fresh scientific look at the most ancient technology for improving, transcending, expanding your mind out into sat chit ananda; overcoming death by attaining samadhi, the death trance, the truth(sam) a(of) dhi(God). God is the phenomenon of death and we can embrace and transcend the transition, stomp around like elephants, or pretend like we don't really know, play peek-a-boo if that is meaningful to you.

Inspiring translation and commentary.

I have read about a half dozen translations of the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, and this is my overall favorite of those. There is extensive discussion of various aspects of yoga psychology in the preliminary chapters, along with outlining Samkhya philosophy, which is the original philosophical foundation of the Yoga Sutras, though the Sutras are widely incorporated in to many paths and points of view, such as Tantra and Advaita Vedanta. This version does include a strong 'nondual' flavor as well. I especially appreciated his personal preference for including an emphasis on nada yoga (the practice of meditation on subtle, internal, naturally arising sounds), as a main practice discussed in the book. Also this is clearly a translation and discussion by an accomplished practitioner.
The Yoga Sutras are such an important book in Indian/Hindu spirituality that, for anyone interested in meditation and spiritual practice, it is a must read. Pandit Arya, who did a profound translation of the first of the four 'books' or sections that make up the Yoga Sutras, wrote in his introduction that if all of Indian culture were to disappear except for the Yoga Sutras, then, through the of intuitive realization and creativity the Yoga Sutras empowers, all of the greatness of their culture would re-emerge (and then some!). Often even great masters continue to study the Yoga Sutras, as they are a profound owners manual to practice and the vastness of spiritual development.
Though no translation and commentary can fully explore the richness of the Yoga Sutras, this one is a fine contribution.
