The worst.

Is this even a book? It's so chock full of spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and poor sentence structure that it's almost impossible to understand. As for the content, a twelve year old could have come up with more insight. An absolute waste of money and I feel like a fool for paying anything for it. My bad. I'll pay more attention next time.

Law is Gospel

"Law is Gospel" wrote Charles Spurgeon of this writer. And after reading this book, you can understand why. Law looks at many of the stories we learned from Genesis in Sunday school class, and shows that they are much more significant than many of our SS teachers understood. Far from being morality lessons, they show the gospel was being unveiled from the first chapters of the first book. Law is inspiring in his devotional style, invigorating in his doctrinal discipline, and pastoral in his applications to the reader.

Outstanding source of ideas for teachers and preachers

Although this little gem of a book is about 150 years old, it is one of the very few books I've found that focuses on how Genesis points to Jesus Christ. The thing that I love about this approach is that it mirrors quite often the thoughts of the apostles in New Testament as they contemplate what God was pointing to in the OT. So for Genesis he has about 50 items. Some of them are not mentioned clearly in the NT. Some of them are harder to see. Often he doesn't build a strong case for the point, but instead moves into a devotional style teaching that builds on his initial claim.

Other points in his book of fifty cases where the gospel is sown into Genesis are more powerful. I found about 10 of his points that are worth preaching and have developed a blog on those points. So this little book is the source for my original blog on Genesis!! I believe he is most convincing when Henry Law's perspective matches the perspective of the NT authors.

Let me illustrate the style with on of his very interesting points. He teaches on Melchizedek from Genesis 14. Here is a snippet of his teaching for you to see:

"The first war, which darkens history's page, is ended. Abraham is moving homewards--crowned with success--laden with spoil. Suddenly a scene breaks on us--marvelous in what it reveals--marvelous in what it conceals. A personage, who is all wonder, stands on the stage of Scripture. His name bids us mark him well. It is a full Gospel-note. He is high in earthly dignity, for he is Salem's king. He is high in holy function, for he is the priest of the most high God. Do we ask his lineage? It is shrouded in a veil, which we may not pierce. Do we seek the morning of his days? His sun never rises. Do we seek the evening of his life? His sun never sets. He only appears in full-blown stature, and in meridian blaze. So obscure is he in sublimity, so sublime in obscurity, that it is no surprise to hear the question, Can this be merely man? He comes forward with neither empty hand nor silent lip. He strengthens the patriarch with refreshment for the way. He adds, too, the greater strength of blessing in the name of God. Abraham owns the claim to reverence and to homage. He presents a tenth part of all.

Such is the record. But Scripture pauses not here. It teaches us, that all these lines of mystery are lineaments of Jesus. It shows, in this stately person, no doubtful glimpse of the glories of the office of the Lord. It tells us in distinct phrase, he is "made like unto the Son of God." The tidings are often repeated, that Jesus is "a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." Hence faith, which only lives looking unto Jesus, sits at His feet in holy, happy musings, and finds the cheering of full Gospel-rays. (End H. Law quote)

So you can see what I'm saying. This style is convincing in this passage in part because Hebrews draws a link between Melchizedek and Jesus. In some of his chapters that link is not made as clearly. This is the reason why I did not give this book a five star. However, it is actually one of my favorite books because it's focus matches quite closely to my own focus for preaching.

Dr.Moenaerts book was a pleasure to read and offered interesting food for thought on delivering marketing strategy: the book really moves you back into the driver's seat of Marketing Strategy. In my view it's not the kind of material for newcomers to the subject; it is a very valuable, action-driven textbook for the passionate professional, or entrepreneur.

The truth is that we need to know what the bible says about prayer and then to remind the Father of his promises for our lives. This book is a powerful read for anyone who wants a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father.

From the Author
The preface chapters of "Pray What God Says" are an introduction, addressing new believers or those who may have grown cold in their relationship with God. I hope to connect or reconnect them to the word of God, the truth about what God has promised to His people. His people are those who have declared a "YESS" to Him, meaning Yielded hearts, Embracing God's promises and Submitting and Surrendering their will to His.

The later part of the book gives a few topical scriptures as a tool to help you develop your own prayer life. If you don't have a prayer life or don't know what God says about your situation, or you think your prayer life is not effective, then this book is a tool to help you learn to commune with God. I want to help you learn and know of God as I have learned to know Him. My knowledge is increasing daily and I expect my relationship to grow daily and I don't put a ceiling on my relationship either. There is no pinnacle to a relationship with God. Wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the word of God and relationship with Him is without measure.�

My intention for writing is to get people to want to communicate with God and their spiritual Father. It is to help people build their relationship with God, reattaching them to the word of God. Because the word of God is going to tell them who they are, who they belong to, what they can have, and what they can do.�It is only through a relationship with God, through learning the scriptures and prayer, that you will be able to live a regenerated life. This is a life that can be conformed and transformed daily to the likeness of Jesus Christ. When you Pray What God Says--the scriptures--it will yield a nourishing and strengthening of the spirit man; the release of blessing, healing and deliverance for yourself and those for whom you pray; and much more.

I believe praying the scriptures is extremely valuable. It assures that our prayers are in line with God's desires and gives us words when we don't know exactly what to pray. It helps us esteem God's Word above our own words. However, my brief perusal of this book (which I downloaded for Kindle b/c it was free and I assumed it would be mainly the text of excellent Scripture passages to pray) quickly revealed its smack of the "health, wealth, and prosperity" or "name it and claim it" gospel that is a misrepresentation of our God and the truly good news. The author uses phrases like "speaking what the Word says is appropriating the power of God" and "availing yourself to [sic] this prayer key can and will gain you access to a divine response." This kind of thinking reduces our relationship with God through Jesus our great high priest to the level of a rabbit's foot or incantation. God is not a genie who must come when we use the right words. Instead, He has given us His Spirit and access to the throne of Grace, which we may approach with confidence to find help in time of need. The Scripture passages in this book are very short, KJV, often taken out of context, often misapplied to situations (eg. promises made to the nation of Israel and applied, here, to each individual believer). The author does affirm some wonderful truths; she exhorts us to honor the Word and do what it says. For a more helpful treatment of this topic, I recommend "A Call to Spiritual Reformation: Priorities from Paul and His Prayers" by D. A. Carson.

Anyone wanting to go deeper into UNDERSTANDING prayer will not find it here. This book would be a great review of Scripture regarding prayer. It misses the mark about practicing the presence of God which is what prayer is really about.

The author makes valid points, many that can help someone grow if they are struggling. The book assumes too much regarding the reader's position, though. Prayer is a topic that often becomes universal thus watering down the function of prayer each believer needs to grow in.

I will use the book as a supplement rather than a go-to type of book. A good concordance would be just as beneficial.

Since it was first published in 1992, this book has become one of the leading anthologies of art theoretical texts in the English-speaking world. This expanded edition includes the fruits of recent research, involving a considerable amount of newly-translated material from the entire period, together with additional texts from the last decades of the twentieth century.

The features that made the first edition so successful have been retained:

• The volume provides comprehensive representation of the theories which underpinned developments in the visual arts during the twentieth century.
• As well as writings by artists, the anthology includes texts by critics, philosophers, politicians, and literary figures.
• The content is clearly structured into eight broadly chronological sections, starting with the legacy of symbolism and concluding with contemporary debates about the postmodern.
• The editors provide individual introductions to each of the 371 anthologized texts.

Material new to this expanded edition includes texts on African art, on the Bauhaus and on the re-emergent avant-gardes of the period after the Second World War. About the Author
Charles Harrison is Professor of History and Theory of Art and Staff Tutor in Arts at the Open University. He is the author of numerous books on modern art criticism and art theory.

Paul Wood is Senior Lecturer in Art History at the Open University. He is co-editor, with Charles Harrison and Jason Gaiger, of Art in Theory 1648–1815 (2001) and Art in Theory 1815–1900 (1998).

A valuable reference book

Had I read the reviews about this book, I wouldn't have bought it.

I had to though, for my "Art: Language and Theory" class, in my second year of Graphic Design major. I was shocked with it at first, it's almost 1300 pages, with not a single image in it! It looked extremely dull. But the thing is, I found it extremely useful, and enjoyable to read at times too. It covers art theories in the 20th century, and has texts written by artists, philosophers, polticians and much more.

I now refer to it with every paper I write, every presentation I make and so on. There are also letters and notes in the book by artists such as Cezanne and Matisse, which are delightful to read. I use a dictionary sometimes, but not always, though I agree, the language is hard to comprehend at first glance.

I don't think any art student or teacher could do without this book, I used it as a beginners guide while studying art, and I won't stop using it. Don't be put off when you first get this book, you'll learn to value and appreciate it with little time.

I happened to have a professor that was very knowledgeable and with her aid in explaining the content it was really a great read

The book will give you a lot of historical knowledge on art in this time frame, through interviews and reviews and such. It is, however, incredibly dry. Art history tends to be that way if you aren't really into it so i think book reviews are subjective! I happened to have a professor that was very knowledgeable and with her aid in explaining the content it was really a great read. I would look for the specific artists you appreciate most instead of trying to read the entire thing. There are some really important writings in here.
