An attractive, literate, accessible book that changed my photography

First, my skill level: I am a photography enthusiast who has a fairly good grasp of photographic theory and methods, who has an eye for image composition, and who uses a DSLR to produce quality images, for someone of my experience. NOT a professional. NOT an expert. But passionate and always learning.

Now, my review:

I celebrate this book's powerful impact on my photography, an impact that occurred because I read the book as a 176 page persuasive argument in favor of manual exposure.

On colorful, glossy, and attractively arrayed pages, Peterson argues for a distinction between an image's "correct exposure" and its "creatively correct exposure." The former, your camera's light meter will reliably report; the latter, you must derive based on the scene and your intentions for it. Camera light meters don't care about which items photographers want in focus or left intentionally over- or underexposed; they care only about the degree to which the areas of frames assigned to their attention meet the accepted standard 18% grey specification. When that standard produces an image to your liking, great! But many times, your intended image is not possible if the meter's guidance is accepted. Hence, the need for manual exposure.

This book is a concise, yet thorough and eminently readable discussion of factors that affect an image's exposure: aperture (how wide open is the hole that lets light in through the lens to reach the camera's sensor), shutter speed (how long is that hole open), and light (that which allows the camera and its photographer to "see" anything). Interestingly, Peterson does not spend nearly as much time on ISO (the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light) as he does on aperture and shutter speed, but his choice does not damage the book's final excellence.

Appearing, on average, about once per page are wonderful images from his professional work that showcase whatever subject matter is currently under review. More importantly, each of those images is accompanied by a marvelously detailed report as to the reason for his presence at the scene reflected, as well as his thought process that yielded the settings and methods choices he made before pushing the shutter button. I am a big fan of such process captions, and Peterson writes them VERY well.

Earlier I said this book functioned for me as a persuasive argument for shooting in manual exposure. Because of this book, I made the choice to shoot manual from now on, except when conditions require aperture- or shutter priority. Before reading "Understanding Exposure," I would have snickered at the suggestion that I would shoot in manual. But Peterson's work convinced me that if you understand the interplay of aperture, shutter, ISO, and light well enough - and I think I do - then manual mode is the mode that offers the best chance of producing the image of your vision. As important, the book convinced me that manual mode is not nearly as challenging or cumbersome to employ as I once thought it was. Now that I have been shooting in manual for a couple of weeks, I tell you the book is right.

I heartily, unconditionally recommend "Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition."

Great information, could use a one-stop summary page

This book is full of great information about the basics of photography. I've been around (mostly point-and-shoot) cameras for many years, but I finally feel like I understand the theory behind exposure.

Mr. Peterson shares from his vast experience, including some amazing pictures. I especially appreciated his frequent use of two side-by-side pictures, one showing what NOT to do and the second showing the right thing to do.

Although the author appears to favor Nikon cameras, he writes in a very generic way that applies to all camera brands.

My only complaint about this book is that there is not a one-stop summary page. All of the pointers that indicate the type of settings to use for certain situations are simply included in prose format throughout the book. This will make it difficult to use as a reference without a lot of sticky notes or folding of page corners down. I would have appreciated a simple table presenting the scenario (i.e. shooting with backlight) and the recommended approach (i.e. Aperture Priority, f/11, ISO 400, shutter 1/250).

Still a great read for anyone who is new to photography or would like to benefit from Mr. Peterson's expertise.

BEST photography book I've EVER read!!!

This third edition of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is brilliant! In the first 30 pages, I've gotten more information on how to use my camera settings to take creative photographs than the dozens of books I've read, or all the courses and seminars I've taken. And all for less than $20!

Some reviews have suggested that this book is only for the very basic beginner. I beg to differ. I have been counseled by and shadowed many professionals who've been in the industry a number of years, (never mind all the money spent on books, videos, seminars, clinics and courses). After spending any time with the pros, I was always certain that the only way to get the best photos was to get a bigger bank account to be able to purchase the best, most up-to-date gadgets, special lights, expensive strobes (in multiples), and super expensive/fancy lenses. Oh... let's not forget the assistants that you'll also have to hire to hold some of the gadgets. And yet, most of their photos looked so homogenized and truly a product of all the photographic "stuff" rather than the camera. I kept thinking that maybe I was just not getting it. I was almost convinced that obviously, all the creative photos are just good quality, basic photos which have been processed, and re-processed in one or more editing software programs such as Photoshop (another one of the "must have" gadgets). NO!! Bryan Peterson explains how to really use the camera to get that creative shot. After all, capturing a photo, is really nothing more than capturing and manipulating light. He makes it simple enough for the beginner to understand, and yet, without being condescending, can teach (or remind) the pros of the all-too-frequently overlooked simplicity of how to use only the camera, considering ISO, aperture and shutter speed to work in harmony to get a 'one of a kind' photo.

One of the statements I have heard all too often from professional photographers is that the on-camera flash is useless. Interestingly, I have found it to be a godsend in many photographic situations, and then get accalades from the same professionals about the quality of the lighting. Hmmm... Anyway, Bryan Peterson shares information on what I've already discovered; the on-camera flash is another great tool that already comes with your camera.

I will, in all fairness, confess that I have a DSLR, so I can't deny or confirm the book's subtitle of "how to shoot great photographs with any camera" and how it relates to the 'point and shoot' cameras.

Anne M. Nordhaus-Bike is president of the firm ANB Communications, www.anbcommunications.com. Nordhaus-Bike also helped establish the Gazette, a Chicago community newspaper, where she served as fine arts editor for two decades. In 2006, she launched Living in Harmony, a monthly astrology column that ran for two years. She remains involved with the paper as assistant editor, member of the board of directors, and contributing writer. Nordhaus-Bike's work has been recognized with four Apex awards from Communications Concepts Inc. a Washington, DC-area communication and journalism think tank, and one award from the Illinois Woman's Press Association. In 1997, she was added to the "Wall of Fame" of the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY. After a 20-year hiatus from painting, she began working as a professional artist in watercolors and oils in 1996 and has shown her works in numerous solo and group shows. An accomplished musician and theatrical performer, in the past few years she has focused her work in the arts on spiritual and mystical subjects and themes inspired by nature. Most recently, she has begun arranging and composing music and combining it with spoken word, photography, and visual art. Native grassland prairies exist in the lands of Iowa and Nebraska, but not in Ohio. So what happened to that little village in southern Ohio called Saundersville? Saundersville was a tiny village founded by three brothers, William Jesse, and Jacob Sanders, in or about 1835. The brothers moved their families from Virginia, taking a grueling journey across the Alleghany Mountains using horse drawn wagons. Many descendants of the Sanders brothers lived and farmed there in Saundersville until the 1970s, when the land was bought out and stripped of all of its familiar existence. This is the story of what happened in between those two events - the creation and destruction of Saundersville, and who lived there and what they did there. This book is based on documented historical facts about the history of Saundersville and the people who lived there. The sources of information presented here is wide and varied. My ancestors migrated from Virginia to Ohio and Harland Brent Sanders has included many pages with excellent documented source citations about my father's and mother's families farming the rich lands of Gallia and Lawrence Counties. This book explains the beginning and the prosperous years of Saundersville, Ohio; settled by three Sanders brothers and their families in the early 1800's. I want to thank the author for including many early photos and good maps to help today's genealogists researching families in southern Ohio. Saundersville has disappeared vanished and we can only find the cemeteries and monuments of the early settlers.

This my family

Good history about early Ohio. The postmaster was my great great grandfather. My only complaint is it has an unbalanced amount of information on the different branches of the family. But I understand the author is working on a volume two and looking to expand the info on ths other branches as well as the earlier history of the family.

Love this partial history of my ancestors back to 1700's. It broght back so many memories of people still alive into the 1950's. Many pictures of places I remember that are gone now. It turns out the author is my second cousin. I remember his grandfather and great-grandfather.

Stirring Memoir

This book reads like a memoir, heavy on the narrative, light on dialog. Madison suffers through a childhood of neglect and poor examples of adulthood, which lead her into a lifestyle that she vowed would never be hers. We watch her struggle and suffer silently with the choices and decisions she makes, but also her desire to lead a different, better life.

She enters several relationships that are destructive to herself esteem, but give her the financial stability she needs after enduring a childhood of poverty. It is not a sunshine and roses story. She makes an effort to lead a traditional life that ultimately backfires in her face. Throughout the book you are rooting for her to find peace and stability on her own.

The writing in this book is well-organized and stirring. There are some editing issues, but nothing that pulls you out of the story. All in all it was a fascinating insight into the world, mindset and choices of a woman who is struggling to find herself and her indepence. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Following in the footsteps of family history

I would never have known about this book if it wasnt for my friend teena sloan hendricks posting it on her fb . i had to tell her thank you, because Madison blu you put your all into this book and I know it couldn't have been easy. To have the strength to keep going in the beginning years when you had parents who were the type like yours and be surrounded by so many who made you feel unloved. Your grandmother no matter the time and distance always had love for you and glad you realized that. As I read this book it made me think about how hard so many kids have it. It like as a single parent it wasn't easy but I put my best into it and then you have a kid like Madison who only wanted to be what she considered to be normal,and she looks for that in all the wrong places and ways but the comfort zone can feel so good. I love the ending.

A violent story about cruel people

This is a riveting tale set in the Everglades swamp, where some of the human dwellers rival the alligators for sheer cruelty. The story is so well told I read it all at one sitting. It is certainly a violent story, so don't even think about reading it if that bothers you. There is enough black humor involved to keep you from descending into depression from the violence, but I doubt that you will be laughing. It is certainly a good read!

Mayhem and murder in the Everglades

In Wildlife, the latest horror thriller by Jeff Menapace, the setting was the Florida Everglades, where two families - the Daigles and the Roys - carried on a modern-day Hatfield-McCoy kind of feud. It was harmless enough until a self-serving lie by young Travis Roy triggered a deadly chain of events that would involve not only the two families, but also another family, the Burks, who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. And as if murder wasn't gruesome enough, the victims' bodies were disposed of quickly by hungry gators.

I thought it would be tough to match the intensity of the author's Bad Games series, or the gruesomeness of Hair of the Bitch, but Wildlife succeeded with its horrifying story of the Burk family's desperate attempts to survive against both human and animal predators in one of the most hostile environments imaginable.

It's another winner by one of the top horror writers in America.

Wild about Wildlife!

Menapace has done it again. This was a fun and fast read. Yes, I'm developing a serious case of "kindle thumb" after this one. Action-packed, harrowing jolt of swamp malevolence. Not as psychological as Bad Games, (we don't really get as close a peek into the twisted psyche of the psycho and his witchy mom) but lots of entertainment to be sure. Looking forward to what he will write next.
