Good overview about history, concepts and patterns of stream processing paradigm (unfortunately, very IBM-biased)

Internet of things, cloud and mobile are the major drivers for stream processing. Use cases are network monitoring, intelligent surveillance, but also less technical things such as inventory management or fraud detection. The book helps a lot to get a basic understanding about history, concepts and patterns of the stream processing paradigm.

CONTENT

The book starts with an introduction to stream processing explaining the motivation and need for this paradigm. Part 1 (Fundamentals) contains my favorite chapters of this book as you get a lot of knowledge about stream processing and why different academic and commercial projects and products emerged for stream processing – and how they differ. The end of part 1 gives an overview about academic systems such as TelegraphCQ, STREAM, Aurora and Borealis. Afterwards, commercial systems such as TIBCO BusinessEvents and Oracle CEP are discussed, before switching over to “real” stream processing frameworks and products: IBM InfoSphere Streams and TIBCO StreamBase as proprietary alternatives, and Twitter Storm (now Apache Storm) and Yahoo S4 as open source options.

Part 2 (application development – data flow programming) discusses some basic concepts of stream processing such as flow composition (static, dynamic, nested), flow manipulation (operators, punctuations, windowing), modularity and extensibility. Part 3 discusses the architecture of a stream processing system and its applications. Part 4 goes into more detail discussing design principles and patterns for functional / non-functional topics and data processing / transformation. Part 5 describes three use cases from different verticals (general operations monitoring, healthcare and semiconductor).

Altogether, you get a good overview about the stream processing paradigm, including history, basic concepts, design principles and use cases.

VERY IBM-BIASED

The book has a lot of great content. However, you should be aware that it is focused on IBM InfoSphere Streams and its programming language SPL. All screenshots and code examples (and there are a lot!) use these. That is absolutely legitimate as the authors were involved in creating this product / this language respectively its academic ancestors.

If you want to or have to use another programming language, framework (such as Apache Storm) or product (such as TIBCO StreamBase), you can skip several parts of this book (all code examples; chapter about IBM InfoSphere Streams architecture; implementation of use cases; etc). Also, you should keep this in mind when reading the first part of the book, which compares different products.

Nevertheless, the book is still worthy reading as you learn a lot about stream processing concepts in general.

CRITICISM

There is only a few things to criticize. What I did not like:

The book is written in a very academic style. When I wrote my degree dissertation, I had to use the same style. Not suited for a “business book”, in my opinion.
The price for the book is very high (100 USD / 80 Euro).
The book has over 500 pages, but a lot of it is source code, which is not needed or read by most readers, probably. If you want to / have to learn IBM InfoSphere Streams, you will probably do a training session with IBM coaches instead of trying to learn with this book (I doubt this would work as this is no training book). On the other side, if you will use another product instead of IBM’s, then you also do not care about the source code.

CONCLUSION

This book is not good for evaluation of different products as it is very IBM-biased. Nevertheless I really enjoyed reading the chapters about history, concepts and design patterns. I learned a lot about stream processing in general. As you do not have many options, if you want to buy a book about stream processing, my recommendation is to buy this one, even if you do not care about IBM’s product, but want to use another one such as TIBCO StreamBase.

An excellent book for understanding streaming analytics applications. Covers a wide spectrum of views from historical background, current commercial solutions, system architecture considerations and core analytics implementation, all with a focus on realtime inline data analytics processing. The scope of the book is very wide but at the same time there are many detailed examples. Cannot recommend too highly.

About the Author

THOMAS BULKOWSKI is a successful investor with more than thirty years of experience trading stocks. He is also the author of Encyclopedia of Candlestick Charts and Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns. His work has appeared in magazines such as Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities, SFO, Active Trader, The Technical Analyst, The Trader's Journal, and Traders'. Before earning enough from his investments to "retire" from his day job at age 36, Bulkowski was a hardware design engineer with Raytheon and a senior software engineer for Tandy Corporation.

I recently purchased Tom Bulkowski's latest book, Getting Started In Chart Patterns Second Edition and I had only one problem with it …. I couldn't put it down!
I'm an experienced position and swing trader and from Chapter 1 through competition of this book Thomas has helped me resolve the questions that keep reoccurring in today's trading environment.

For example in Chapter 2, Identifying Chart Patterns, Thomas gives excellent examples of what I consider happening now in the Dow trading.
So I immediately found helpful the second paragraph, The Blank Chart and to back up his comments he has figure 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 which leads up to 2.4 which confirms the fact why this year, 2014 being a similar pattern. Upon seeing these examples and reading his explanation regarding these patterns it helps me realize how difficult a trading environment we are in and to be patient with these patterns. As the early bird doesn't get the worm the early bird gets cooked!

Chapter 2, made me realize even long-term holders can get brutally attacked and even dragged down to the point of no return as the chart patterns wreak havoc on experienced traders. Thomas gives the statistics of success and failure to help guide you to determine if purchases are even worth purchasing and if so when and for how long! That information and his percentages of success are worth the purchase of the book.

This year 2014 has been a lot of entry point purchase head fakes and numerous land mines occurring. So if you're in a position and it changes directions, Thomas explains not only how but when to jump ship! This trading year has been one full of washing out weak hands, position stagnation and a lot of market noise to throw your trading off track, a lot of reversals and Chapter 2 puts all these current problematic issues into view, front and center and then what you should do.

Chapter 3, Trend Lines is a great chapter and after reading it a few times over to soak it all in. I reviewed all my current trades and drew lines to confirm direction is still in my favor and to reconfirm my buy and sell points. I also found page 21, Touch Spacing very helpful and yes it's something I have been ignoring in my buy and sell decisions. Many thanks to Thomas for the Touch Space reminder. Trend Line Length is also helpful in my position hold times. The measure rule can be a stickler to figure out but once you get familiar with such useful calculations you will find yourself relying and using this formula on all your trades! Thomas makes the formula easy to use and handholds you through his examples and yes with charts and pictures, yeah! Thomas even adds in a dash of witty humor so you will remember what you are learning.

Chapter 4, my version of dissecting the frog, after you find your support and resistance all other organs are in the same place! Page 37, Fibonacci Retracements, figure 4.2 is a favorite chart of mine because I keep seeing these daily and weekly wing patterns so my ah-ha moment was realizing they are Broadening Bottoms and Tops and now how and when to buy and sell them! This alone will help me make future money on trades! Again, this pattern is happening daily in the marketplace and now I recognize it.

Chapter 5, 10 Buy Signals
1) What a great review and great review of buy and sell points.
2) An excellent visual aid and simple explanation of which patterns are bearish and bullish. I love this chapter and will review it daily and prior to purchases.
3) Page 79 figure 5.18 another great chart and excellent explanation of all the patterns that are occurring this year 2014. Also, more excellent examples of charts and his trading tactics.
4) The different types of market bottoms is a favorite of mine. They try to disguise themselves but spotting a bottom is sure to make money as it turns upward! Recognizing a bottom is worth its weight in gold.

Chapter 6, 10 Sell Signals
Now that we recognize bottoms or are buy points, Thomas takes us to the top… shows and explains sell signals and/or tops…Wee! It is fun to be at the top when you bought in 20 points ago, now what?…… Knowing his 10 sell, sell, sell signals and the patterns that scream out sell! A great review for when I'm ready to click the sell button.

I hope you gain as much insight from this book as I did.

All charts. Nothing but charts. I had no clue there was so much to see in charts. The charts are explained very clearly. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for but this book really is what the cover says it is, charts, charts, and more charts.

I highly recommend this book to all levels of traders

I am not a seasoned stock trader; however, I have read many books on techincal analysis, have taken lessons from pros, attended many webinars, and have been studying the technical aspects of the market for about 2 years. This book covers it all and has brought confidence to my trading. I highly recommend this book to all levels of traders, there's a lot of simple principles of trading you already know, such as double top, support, resistance, etc. but there are a few gems you can still take away from reading this.

I am excited to start reading Mr. Bulkowski's swing trading book next.

Latina writer Benitez begins her excellent debut novel with a painful event--the wait for a drowned body to float to shore--and works backwards, retracing the myriad, seemingly insignificant steps that led to the character's death. As in Like Water for Chocolate , this novel sympathetically explores the lives of Mexican women caught in a mystical, fatalistic world. Chayo, a flower seller, and her sister Marta, a chambermaid, live in a poverty-stricken village by the sea. When 15-year-old Marta is raped and becomes pregnant, seemingly barren Chayo and her husband, Candelario, agree to take the child. Soon after, however, Chayo discovers that she too is expectant and reneges on the promise. Livid, Marta arranges with el brujo , the witch doctor, to put a curse on her sister's child. Both women bear sons, and a remorseful Marta tells her sister about the curse, which she claims to have had removed by la curandera , the healer. But when Chayo's son almost dies after being bitten by fire ants, the sisters' relationship once more deteriorates and, inexorably, the tragedy presaged in the book's opening chapter comes to pass. Benitez's unsparing vision into the stark realities of village residents' lives offers a poignant counterpoint to superficial vacation snapshots of Mexico.

When Chayo becomes pregnant and they change their mind about adoption, Marta has a witch doctor put a curse on Chayo's unborn baby, setting in motion a series of tragic events. Characters, presented individually by the author and then woven together by plot, attach themselves to readers' sensibilities, and lull them into believing in the goodness of life in this sleepy seaside community. However, all this cultural richness is poised for tragedy when divine retribution takes over.

This emotionally gripping, though flawed first novel tells a story of life and death in the Mexican village of Santiago. When the infertile Chayo unexpectedly conceives, she and her husband renege on their promise to raise her sister's unwanted child as their own, setting in motion a chain of events that ultimately result in tragedy. The author displays an exceptionally keen sense of detail and creates interesting people whose very different lives lend variety to the narrative. However, the book suffers from an abundance of underdeveloped characters and story lines, which at times render it rather unsatisfactory. The inclusion of an apparently supernatural element works potently at a visual level but makes no substantive contribution to the novel and may prompt readers to wonder if Benitez is simply hopping on the bandwagon of Magical Realism. Recommended for libraries with a strong interest in Latino literature.

THE DISQUIETING TRUTH

I would like to see several of the previous reviewers address the following:

-- In 1969, a Col. MacArthur testified to Congress, requesting $10 million for the Pentagon to develop, WITHIN 10 YEARS, synthetic viruses that would be "refractory" (i.e., resistant) to the human immunological system. Congress granted the monies. Much of the resulting work was carried out at Fort Dietrich, Maryland, the Army's main bio-warfare laboratory.

-- Within several years virologists began describing in the medical journals their experiments with new laboratory developed viruses being tested on cattle, who began to exhibit the symptoms of a "slow, wasting disease."

-- Later, some of these same gov't. researchers proposed, since human experimentation was "considered unethical," introducing these new

viruses covertly by combining them with other experimental drugs for human testing.

-- Next, the WHO conducted the largest innoculation campaign in history in Africa -- which now has the highest incidence of HIV in the world.

-- Then, the NIH conducted the voluntary innoculation campaigns for Hepatitus among the gay communities in New York and San Francisco.

-- Within a year, circa 1979-1980, the first cases of the strange new cancer-like disease started to appear almost simultaneously in the gay communities in those two areas (such simultaneous geographic diversity for the start of a new disease is impossible in nature).

--Then, in the early 1980's, when independent researchers saw the annual gov't. published percentage of population/infection ratio rising dramatically each year in these two test groups (with a trend line that appeared to be heading toward 100%) and started questioning this, the gov't. STOPPED PUBLISHING THE DATA.

--And, to put this in its proper political context, it was the same time frame as the Right and the Religious Right were coming into national political power with the election of 1980, and their overwhelming hatred of gays and the new sexual freedom that had developed in the 1960's and 1970's.

Read this and the author's previous book, "Aids and the Doctors of Death" along with David Horowitz's books; there is a great deal more chilling evidence to show how the new bio-technology has enabled the far right to pursue their fascistic ends much more secretly and efficiently than their German Nazi counterparts.

Does the Sea Remember

I enjoyed the contents of the Benetiz compilation of stories. Each had a full meaning and connects to each reader through feelings of pain, loss, guilt, longing and so much more. Benitez entitles the story very well, because even though all the stories are separate, they intertwine in this town, Santiago, which is close by the sea. It relates to a sailors own tales, and even though the sea is rough and forceful at times, it holds many stories full of love and heartache. Remedios is part of the sea and in tune with nature so much that she knows the troubles of every one. The main focus shifted every so often, but in general I think Benitez wanted to say that we can bury or throw away our painful pasts, but anyday, it may be dragged back to us by the foaming sea currents. Our pasts will either drag us down, or kill us, it is what we do for the future that ensures whether it is true or not. And making the right choices isn't always the easiest thing to do when life doesn't have many options for a tourist town like Santiago. Even the town itself is meaningful. It contains many lives that nonetheless are dreamful and hopeful, but not changing as much as they would like.

About the Author
Dr. John Litva is director of the Communications Research Laboratory and professor of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. A principal investigator and thrust leader with the Telecommunications Research Institute of Ontario (TRIO), he also serves as a consultant to both government and industry. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from University of Western Ontario. Dr. Titus Lo holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University, where he is a senior research engineer for the Communications Research Laboratory. Currently he is researching the design, development, and application of intelligent antennas in wireless communications.

I can't wait for the next book!

He had restrained himself for Audrey, but this time, he was going to drink from Grace's well, dominate with all the violence in his soul.

Exhibition is just as hawt as The Arrangement. I know that this book just came out, and I'm trying really, really hard to not be needy, but can I have some more? I don't know if I can wait for Hugo's next book without exploding. I love the grittiness of the story, the darkness. The sexual energy and tension between Jason and Grace will MAKE YOU EXPLODE! Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Wow! I really enjoyed reading Exhibition! I liked getting to know the characters. There's a bit of darkness, but it's the "right amount". Grace & Jason both have issues, which is the reason they've both turned to the dark side of BDSM and eventually find each other. I look forward to reading more from Nicolette Hugo.

A bit of a dark but very steamy novel. Jason is a photographer and a dominant, Grace is an exhibitionist and Jason feels the perfect muse for his next exhibition and in the process explore their dark desires. Lots of emotion these characters are very complex, I loved the story very hot and intense. Amazing Read!
