A Must Have

Wow, I have to say I am THOROUGHLY impressed! I've looked through many art books for various techniques and how-to. Some feel lacking as if they skipped steps or are too wordy. This is NOT the case with Fantasy Creatures in Clay at all! I'm happy to say a look through this book shows complete understanding of the materials, as expected, but the artist has taken care to walk us through not only the basic processes, but many fine points which seem to never be discussed in other sculpt books!

Detailed and lots of process photos with a clear and to the point explanation. No space or words were wasted with this, and any artist seeking to improve their sculpt work, or even get into the medium will surely appreciate this book in their resources. Seriously, she's covered things I hadn't even thought of sculpting, such as semi-transparent wings! This is literally years of skill and practice of an artist begging to be at your fingertips, you should take full advantage of.

Best Book on Sculpting Fantasy Creatures I've Ever Seen

I'm very excited with this purchase. Emily Coleman has out done herself with this book. Mind you, this is not a book with step by step instructions on how to make a dragon or a griffin. Instead Ms. Coleman shares her techniques on how to decide on a pose, how to make the armature of your choice, how to attach the armature to a wooden base if need be, how to block in the clay, etc. She gives detailed instructions on how to sculpt various animal and bird faces, hands, feet, fur, hair and feathers. This book is just what I needed. I have a lot of ideas but didn't know how to execute them. She even explains how to make detailed, feathered wings and wings with membranes. She also explains what tools will be needed and the last section on her painting techniques is priceless. I can't say enough good things about this book. Highly recommended!

Excellent Reference Guide For All Levels

As other reviews have stated, this guide is for both beginning and experienced sculptors, but not beginning artists. You will need to know some anatomy, color theory, and a have little bit of drawing ability to be able to fully appreciate the information contained within. However, the book does contain convenient references to other websites and books that will help you somewhat. Some tutorials are step-by-step and teach you how to create something very specific, which is helpful but doesn't always give you a deeper understanding of how to do the process once on your own. Fantasy Creatures in Clay instead teaches skills and techniques and shows you how to go about using them. It encourages you to practice them on your own until they become instinctive instead of promising some quick way to learn how to sculpt. In that respect it may prove daunting to new sculptors, but rest assured it does give you the information you need to get started and build your abilities.

The guide is beautiful to behold with large and detailed illustrations as well as clear instructions to help you follow along. It is also set up in such a way that referencing it at any stage of your sculpture for help is very and easy allows you to troubleshoot your creation without wasting time. The "field guide" theme and little visual touches such as the field notes make it entertaining and a little more engaging while you are reading. The size and quality of this guide make it quite a bargain at the current price and it would still be worth it near list price.

This book is a complete scam created for the sole purpose of luring Web developers like me into thinking that this is a state of the art book on hot new technology. The book content was probably mechanically created from Google searches, and the 5 star comments are probable faked! This book doesn't make any sense and is completely unusable. The authors of the scam probably figured out that, by the time customers would figure out what this is all about, they would have time to make a few sells.

In fact, I made the suggestion to Amazon that they should remove this title immediately from their catalogue in order to make sure that nobody else falls into the same trap. Somebody is obviously using the Amazon site to lure their customers!

I requested and I got a refund for the $9.99 that I lost on this scam. Meanwhile, my paper copy went straight to the recycle bin.

Picked this up hoping to suggest it as supplemental reading material for students I teach.

To call this a book is slanderous. It starts off with a reference and explanation about windows bootstrap and all sorts of red flags started going off; I gave the author the chance to possible use it as a contrast point with what the actual subject matter was meant to be. He goes on to give us a laundry list of different tools and their google'd descriptions without a lot of context. I eventually gave up reading when the examples were starting. The examples are sorely in need of formatting a more detail.

If you are looking for an introduction to actually using bootstrap I recommend not purchasing this item.

About the Author

Kyung-Whan Yeom was born in Seoul, Korea, in 1957. He received a B.S. degree in electronics from Seoul National University in 1980 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, Korea, in 1982 and 1988, respectively.

From 1985 to 1991, he worked at LG Precision as a principal engineer. He worked on the MIC team as a team leader and was later involved in the military electronics division for EW Equipment. When he was at LG Precision, he received a technical achievement award for the ABEK program from Teledyne Microelectronics.

�

From 1991 to 1995, he worked at LTI on power amplifier modules for analog cellular phones. He joined the Chungnam National University as assistant professor in 1995 and is currently a professor in the Department of Radio Science and Engineering, Chungnam National University, Daejeon, Korea. His research interests are in the design of hybrid and monolithic microwave circuits and microwave systems.

Professor Yeom has been a member of the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science (KIEES) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1995. He was the editor-in-chief of KIEES from 2004 to 2006. He received the IR-52 Jang Youg-Sil Prize from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Korea for his work on cell phone power amplifiers in 1994. He received an academic award from KIEES for the design and fabrication of a novel 60 GHz GaAs pHEMT resistive double balanced star MMIC mixer in 2004. He also received the best paper award from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) for his work, “A Novel Design Method of Direct Coupled Bandpass Filter Based on EM Simulation of Individual Resonator.”

The ADS version used in the book is completely outdated

The book gets some points for being unique in a way that it incorporates ADS during the entire development of the topics. However there is a downside, first it wont teach you ADS from the ground up, meaning you need to at least know the basics of ADS. Second, and this is the real deal breaker, every example and tutorial is based on ADS 2009, and it is completely different from the most recent versions, and im not just talking about menus being placed somewhere else, but drastically different, unless you are doing a basic example its practically impossible to follow the longer tutorials, since ADS 2011 every layer has different labels, some menus no longer exist, etc... I cant understand how is it possible that a book released in 2014 uses ADS 2009. Do yourself a favor and stick to David Pozar's book for microwave theory and youtube tutorials to learn ADS.
