Kept me interested for the most part

This book kept me interested and the premise was intriguing. There were some good plot twists and turns, and the author had clearly done her research about certain elements. However, the writing style was difficult at times--very much telling rather than showing. The reader was always told how the characters felt, and some of the characters, such as Chrissie's father and aunt, felt like one-dimensional evil characters. I would have preferred a bit more depth and nuance in the characterisation and storytelling.

A story of two women whose lives become entwined when one discovers a letter that was written in 1939 but never sent. (never posted; not online posted, but postmarked-stamped). Two powerful stories connect; fate steps in; across history, time, and oceans- for an explosive reunion; a love story so profound- mesmerizing; leaving you utterly speechless when you reach the end; a novel and characters, you will remember long after the book ends.

As the novel begins present day, we hear from a granddaughter and grandmother while visiting in the lovely garden, pulling weeds, (symbols for people in our lives-everything belongs). Readers then hear a tragic and heartbreaking story, told from the loving grandmother; her story, how she met the love of her life- as events unfold, which changed her life.

From Manchester in 1973, the story begins with Tina Craig, a young woman married to a violent and evil man, Rick her husband-controlling, a drunk, lost his job, he drinks, smokes, and gambles and beats her. He has two personalities ranging from good to evil. She has been desperately saving her money in order to escape and leave him; as she has no family or anywhere to turn; however, he finds her money in the coffee can, and now she is doomed once again.

Tina has a wonderful caring friend, Graham at work, and he is worried about her. She also works at a charity shop volunteering and enjoys her customers, where she is not worried about everything she says or does. Her husband gives her money to bet (turns out, it was her coffee money); however, she does not do so, but her friend Graham places the bet for her and wins. He gives her the money, and she offers it to her husband and keeps the part she had saved, and moves out. She is finally happy. The race, March 31, 1973 Grand National horse racing, sealed her fate.

However, Rick cleans up his act, gets a job and quits drinking. He wants her back and says he has changed. She wants so much for a family. She is torn and unsure if he has really changed, but she finds herself pregnant from the last violent time he raped her. When she goes back to pick up her clothes, he slowly turns on the charm and talks her into coming back. Her friends do not share in the joy, as they are very suspicious of Rick, doubting he has really has changed. It works for a while; however, soon thereafter his old ways return. She is afraid for her life and her unborn baby. He is drinking again and this time his violence is the worst ever, leaving her for dead, and baby?

The reason for his anger, is due to The Letter. He finds a letter in her purse. A love letter. Drunk, jealous, and enraged. However, little does he know the letter was one Tina found in one of her customer’s coat pockets; a special love letter from over thirty some years earlier from a solider going off to war, to his pregnant girlfriend.

Tina, now broken and alone, is haunted by the letter, obsessed with finding this Billy and his love. If she cannot be happy, she needs to someone to be. Why didn’t Billy post the letter? Chrissie, the pregnant intended recipient never received this letter. Are they still even alive? Little does Tina know this letter will later change the course of her own life. What became of this couple torn apart? Tina is moved by the contents of the letter but also puzzled as why such a heartfelt message was left in a pocket. She vows to find out what became of Billy and Chrissie.

The second story is of a young woman and man, we meet later in the book, back in 1939- Billy and Chrissie. They are in love. Chrissie’s controlling father, a doctor (one evil cold man), does not like Billy, the boy she is dating.

When Chrissie tells Billy she is pregnant he is overwhelmed due to the war, and the economy and unsure about their financial future. He leaves; however, later that evening, he begins to regret his harsh words and writes a letter to Chrissie. 4th September 1939. One of love. He declares his love and asks for her hand in marriage. When he stops by her house the next day the father informs him, she does not wish to see him. (Of course, she is unaware of any of this).

Billy tells her father he has written her a letter and since the postal service is having issues, the father says he will deliver the letter, but he does not. He puts the letter in a coat pocket which is found years later by a woman. Chrissie is heartbroken, wondering why Billy has deserted her.

Of course, the controlling father will not allow his daughter to bring shame upon the family name, so sends her off to a commune to live with hateful evil nuns and is forced to give up the baby. Her mother, dad, and aunt turned their back on her. Her baby is adopted by Americans. Two young women's lives destroyed by evil men and separated from their babies.

Years later the boy, now a man has always wondered about his biological parents, so sets off to England to find answers. Chrissie (the biological mother)’s life in England is left empty of the life taken away from her so cruelly.

In his search abroad, William runs into Tina working at the library, and tells her of his search for his birth mother and father. She has The Letter which will connect the two stories. The two of them, strangers, begin the search for the owners of the letter, William’s parents to solve the mystery of a past life.

A letter which caused the death of one child, and the saving grace for another. When the two storylines connect, it is one of the most powerful reunions. Ordinary women who overcome extraordinary heartache. A beautiful poignant ending.

Wow, I am not an emotional person; however, here I was traveling, driving in rush hour traffic with iPod, with tears rolling down my face, to the point I could barely see. The reunion scene was the most emotional and vivid scene, making you feel as though you were there. Rachel Atkins' performance was award-winning, even her voice was broken, and cracking, as she was speaking. I was literally hanging on every word, feeling the powerful emotion, pain, and feelings.

Hughes and Atkins were in perfect sync. Hughes writing is amazing, and the way she created both storylines with pitch perfect pacing, and fabulous character development. Please, let this be the narrator for the next book. While in Costco, I finished the book, and re-listened to the last four chapters on the way home once again. It is that powerful; highly recommend the audio version.

Not sure how I missed this stunning book along the way, however, I stumbled upon the audiobook (released May 7, 2015) on Audible and was hooked the first five minutes to the end. Could not put it down until I finished. (Oct 18, 2015 Paperback)

Hard to believe this is a debut! Can understand why it hit number one on the Amazon Kindle Chart, spending 130 days in the top 100 with 2,000 reader reviews. I have since read, world rights including film have been attained from this self-published book (I want a front row seat), and cannot wait for her second book, coming in 2016. A definite pre-order. Kathryn Hughes has a rare talent, and trust me when I say, this gal can write and oh, can Rachel Atkins perform!

I have always loved Anne De Courcy's biographies and books about social history of women, including the excellent The Viceroy's Daughters: The Lives of the Curzon Sisters, 1939 and Debs at War: How Wartime Changed Their Lives, 1939-1945 and I was equally delighted with her latest work, which looks at the rather bizarre subject of 'husband hunting' in the Raj. This book spans all the years of the British in India, although most of the stories are from the twentieth century.

When the British first went to India to trade and work, the men who left the country knew they would probably not return and married Indian wives or took Indian mistresses. As time went on and the East India Company and trade was replaced by government and the ruling classes, men were curtailed from doing this by various means which meant their children were punished by being unable to obtain good jobs and positions. Obviously, as men did not want either their wives or children to suffer through being married to them, gradually their only option was to marry girls from home - easier said than done as travel difficulties meant finding British brides difficult. The Company then began to pay passage to India of a number of willing women who were maintained for a year and expected to marry within that time. For young women, perhaps not pretty or rich enough to make a 'good match' at home, it was a chance to find a husband with better prospects than they could at home and women flocked to India, willing to try to make a go of it. In these early years, the demand for wives were so great that widows were even proposed to during the funeral of their husbands! Although it seems quite amazing to us, for women whose only status came through marriage in those years and who could be considered an 'Old Maid' as young as her early twenties, it was probably a last ditch attempt to avoid a life of dependence or becoming the dreaded governess or companion. These early stories abound with stories of travel difficulties, illness and the possible humiliation as being sent back as 'returned empties'...

Later in the years of the Raj, women themselves (or rather their family) paid for them to visit India either to visit family for the social experience as much as the chance of marriage. These are the years of a social whirl and a chance for young women to experience the heady delights of gala weeks and untold eligable suitors - especially after the first world war, when young men were simply not available to marry at home. Women aimed to marry men from the Indian Civil Service or Army Officers, although many men were unable to marry until they were at least thirty. However, there were plenty of males willing to escort young women to the dances, parties, polo matches and trips that were part of life at that time. De Courcy uses letters, interviews and personal memories to make that time come alive and discusses everything from the voyage out, to pitfalls awaiting the young women who visited and often stayed.

It is fair to say that life in the Raj was not all wonderful. There was inherent racism and mixing between the races was heavily censored. Although one Maharajah recevied permission to bring his discreet French mistress to India, when Maharajah Rajendar Singh wanted to marry the sister of the young Irishman who looked after his horses, the match met disapproval on terms of both race and rank and ended in tragedy. There were many other problems faced by young women: snobbishness, disapproval, the lonliness of isolated plantations or small towns, discomfort, the heat, and the loss of children through illness or because it was expected they would be sent back to England for their education - where they also often suffered, at best from being lonely, and at worst were possibly abused by unscrupulous people who mistreated them when so far away from home. However, for many it was a land of magic, beauty and opportunity and, for many, happy endings. This is a riveting read, full of wonderful personal stories and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Lastly, I read the kindle version of this book (I hope the author makes her other books available in this format) and the illustrations were included at the end.

Reads like research notes

While the topic of shipping hundreds of women to India to become proper British brides is quite intriguing, this book is tedious and disappoints the reader. It is organized into chapters based on categories, such as the "voyage" or "courtship". Each chapter contains vignettes and descriptions of different persons who lived through the Fishing Fleet era. The details about people come and go throughout the book, so there is no flow or storyline to the book. I found many grammatical errors and the lack of commas in many instances led me to improperly understand her sentences; I had to re-read them several times sometimes to comprehend her meaning.

Our book group, which rarely agrees, did concur that this book disappoints. Many of us felt it was filled with interesting information, but we longed for the author to create a story that would keep our interest. Most of us did not even finish the book.

Although it is a very interesting and historicaly correct book, I found that I struggled to get through it. It is very detailed and long. However those interested in India during the Raj and the social goings on of the Britsh in India, will probably find it worth while reading.

COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT BOOK WITH MORE CHARACTER EXPLORATION

I am going to be generous and give this book four stars, but with reservations.
It is a good read, and says a lot about the workings of the Mexican Mafia. My problem with it is the handling of the character and the character development of Enriquez, or lack thereof. This man is a rapist, a murderer, and a gangster. Why did he suddenly go to the other side? The book really glides over this quickly. It seems that a hit was ordered on Enriquez. That they should suddenly turn on him should not be a surprise; the Mafia was his life, he knew how it works. So certainly it could not be for idealism that he defected. Instead it was to protect himself and stay alive. Now he turned and is sharing everything, going above and beyond the call of duty. That is commendable, and I am grateful to him for that. And just as he was promoted up the ranks in the Mafia, now he has reportedly become a celebrity to the LAPD, doing classes, giving speeches, etc. So this man just seems like a great opportunist, but Blatchford doesn't say that at all. To him, he is a new Christian who came from a rough background. As a Californian, I am relieved Davis denied his parole. He's creepy and Blatchford doesn't explore that.

This book takes you to the pits of hell, as you ride in the mind of a cold blooded killer.

Just finish reading this book and it easily replaced "Mafia Under-boss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia" and Henry Hill's "Wiseguy" as the most intense mafia story Ive ever read. I must admit it changed my entire view of La Eme. Coming from a family that has had its share of camaradas and even a carnal (pg 6. Joe "Colorado") in this organization, Ill admit that I had a somewhat different view of La Eme. I knew they were responsible for lowering the drive-bys in the barrios and unlike the monsters south of the border, women and children are totally of limits. What I didn't realize was how plagued this organization is with power-struggles and politicking. Mob books have always interested me, and one thing Ive always noticed is that, if they were to actually follow their own rules they'd probably have less defections. From the books Ive read the story always seems to be the same, the hypocrisy of a broken organization always seems to be the main factor behind these defection. Most these guys would be willing to die for this thing that they grew up loving and believed in, its when they have that sobering moment of hypocrisy within a broken brotherhood (if you could even call it that), that they decide their life has better value. If you like mob book I highly recommend this one but be ready to go on a ride into the darkest places human evil can take you. The majority of this book is about that long, hard, dark ride but I think its a necessary ride the writer must take the reader so that the reader can appreciate the full weight of Renee's decision and redemption. This man (Renee) would take orders without blinking an eye and walk into situations fit only for a gladiator, only to come out the tired bloody victor eagerly awaiting his next assignment but its not until the end of the book, when Renee decides to leave the only life he has ever loved or known, that you see the true raw courage of a warrior.

Fast read, well written, comprehensive

This book is about Rene Esq (Boxer) starting as a teenage kid in a good Mexican family, his rise to the head of the Noestras, the creation of the Mexican mafia La Eme, and eventually his departure. It details prison life, the fear and practices of EME, both inside hand outside of prison, the growth and control of the EME, methods of communication into and out of prison. I liked this book because it is told from the mindset of a teen (through his adult EME life) and his seduction by drugs, control, protection, respect, and false security/happiness in leading his (admitted) horrible life. It is written from Rene's point of view; only part way through the last chapter, the author writes from his perspective. Anyone who knows the EME (i.e., gang cops, prison authorities) will tell you THE WRITING IS FACTUAL AND NOT EXAGGERATED. The prison gang politics & life are detailed. He also gets into his struggle in AND IN coming out of the EME; and cooperating with law enforcement and CA politics. There are 30,000 gangs with 800,000 members that have now captured 2,500 communities. (100,000 alone in Southern CA). I highly recommend this book to would be gang members, all members of law enforcement , state politicians of ALL U.S. States and members of Congress.

Another read is an excellent book "Counter/Strike" which details America's response and struggle in fighting Al Queada, but ends with the increasingly GROWING threat of Radicalization in the U.S. & gangs in the U.S..

In the preface to A Moveable Feast, Hemingway remarks casually that "if the reader prefers, this book may be regarded as fiction"--and, indeed, fact or fiction, it doesn't matter, for his slim memoir of Paris in the 1920s is as enchanting as anything made up and has become the stuff of legend. Paris in the '20s! Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, lived happily on $5 a day and still had money for drinks at the Closerie des Lilas, skiing in the Alps, and fishing trips to Spain. On every corner and at every caf� table, there were the most extraordinary people living wonderful lives and telling fantastic stories. Gertrude Stein invited Hemingway to come every afternoon and sip "fragrant, colorless alcohols" and chat admid her great pictures. He taught Ezra Pound how to box, gossiped with James Joyce, caroused with the fatally insecure Scott Fitzgerald (the acid portraits of him and his wife, Zelda, are notorious). Atrocious typography just kills a great book

A MOVEABLE FEAST
I wrote this review originally for a previous edition no longer offered by Amazon but
it applies just as much to this new (?) edition.

This review is not about the work by Hemingway. This is great book.

The same cannot be said about what I will call the typography. Or rather
the lack of it. The text is essentially a raw scan of a paper edition with
many, much too many, mistyped words and many more false new
paragraphs created, most of them in mid-sentence.

I mean how difficult can it be to search for and destroy any carriage
return not preceded by a full stop.

In short we have here an atrocious text rendering making for a labored reading.

And what happened to the promised illustrations and manuscript pages ?

Please,please, correct this Kindle book and reissue it to all buyers.

things to note about this edition

When I went looking for A Moveable Feast, I wanted the original 1964 version. I was extremely irritated that it is not available in any form except as a used book. In particular, I wanted it in e-book form. All that was offered was this "restored" version. If the author himself had done the restoring, as Anthony Burgess did with the American version of A Clockwork Orange, that I could understand. But when the restoring is done by someone else, I really have qualms about that.

Hemingway's last wife was probably closer to Hemingway than anyone else at the end of his life. At that point in his life he was suffering from mental illness. So I think she did a fine job with the original version. He may have had some nasty things to say about some people he knew when young. He may have used some strong language than refined people are not used to hearing/reading. But this was Hemingway. By his age in that last year, his conversation was probably peppered with both.

When the publisher and Hemingway's surviving relatives decided to reissue this title but to revise it also, then the publisher and online bookstores have a responsibility to the reading public to make sure the public knows this is a different version than the original. It should have separated reviews from the original. It is, in essence, a different book because it is not word for word the same as the original. The fact that they retained the title of the book given to it by Mary, rather than also renaming the book, makes me feel they are financially riding on her coat tails after she is dead.

Also, I have done some additional research online. The restoring by Hemingway's surviving heirs took place in the mid to late 1990s. So, the dividing line for reviews of the original version versus the restored by son/grandson version should be in the 1990s and not 2009 (although I think the e-book version this review is appearing under was published in 2009).

My research also indicated that Hemingway's second wife married him very rapidly after his divorce from Hadley and also after he had published his first successful novel and was now a financial success. I sincerely doubt she would have married a yet unsuccessful Hemingway. I am old now and sometimes cynical. This part of my research left me with unkind feelings toward the second wife, which I seem to be extending in a biblical fashion also to her descendants, the heirs who modified this book. I don't know why I don't blame Hemingway. It is true we women can be catty about other women, sometimes not justifiably (but sometimes we are dead on right).

Personally, I was really not "ready" to read any Hemingway until I was past the age of 20 (except for The Old Man and The Sea). Even though Hemingway started his career at around the age of 20, he was not your average sheltered middle class American kid of that era (or mine). In fact, except for light fiction, I think all adult books read when one was a teen should be reread again after you are an adult. Don't base your opinion of a writer's work on an adolescent reading.

Any favorable reviews of this title that are dated before mid 2009 are not referring to this edition but to the prior edition(s) edited and printed from a 1964 manuscript. This is an entirely different edition, not the beautiful 1964 edition but a malice tainted rewrite by his one of his grandchildren. I think it is irresponsible of Amazon to allow the reviews of the 1964 edition to be applied to this edition which has enough changes made to it that it is not the same book. I beg Amazon to correct this mistake.

Warning in the New York Times

As an author, I am concerned by Scribner's involvement in this "restored edition." With this reworking as a precedent, what will Scribner do, for instance, if a descendant of F. Scott Fitzgerald demands the removal of the chapter in "A Moveable Feast" about the size of Fitzgerald's penis, or if Ford Madox Ford's grandson wants to delete references to his ancestor's body odor.

All publishers, Scribner included, are guardians of the books that authors entrust to them. Someone who inherits an author's copyright is not entitled to amend his work. There is always the possibility that the inheritor could write his own book offering his own corrections.

Ernest was very protective of the words he wrote, words that gave the literary world a new style of writing. Surely he has the right to have these words protected against frivolous incursion, like this reworked volume that should be called "A Moveable Book." I hope the Authors Guild is paying attention.

a bit disappointing (weak four), but I'd be interested in a follow up

I was really looking forward to Gary Gibson's Extinction Game, as it combines two of my favorite concepts: parallel universes and post-apocalyptic settings. But while I found it a generally pleasant read, I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was a bit disappointing, perhaps because of those high expectations.

The premise is so great I'm shocked that it hasn't actually been done before. Jerry Beche, one of the few survivors of an extinction-level, planet-wide plague, hasn't seen a person for years., so he is understandably surprised when he finds a set of footprints outside his home. He is even more shocked when the people those prints belong to abduct him and then explain they are from a parallel universe Earth that has also suffered its own extinction event. Even better, they work for a mysterious entity (is there any other kind of entity?) called The Authority, which is overseeing a kind of exploratory salvage mission through a series of post-apocalyptic Earths. Of course, being a "mysterious entity," hints soon crop up that the Authority might not be as benevolent as they want to seem, and and is in fact holding back some crucial information from their "Pathfinders," the group of explorers Jerry becomes a member of. It also turns out that some of what the Authority is hiding might have a more personal connection to Jerry.

In many ways, then, Extinction Game, is less a post-apocalyptic novel than a conspiracy/murder investigation novel. That isn't to say we don't see a decent number of end-of-the-world scenarios, some of which are more original/interesting than others, including an asteroid strike (which actually becomes a tourist event by visitors from the Authority's Earth, a nuclear war, a rogue brown star (one of my favorites), and an engineered virus that left one Earth filled with strange bee-human hybrids (one of the most original and another personal favorite).

The plot is solid, though I'd say large parts are pretty predictable. Gibson makes no bones about the Authority having some ulterior motives, but I wish they'd been a bit more surprising. Jerry's more personal mystery has an underlying premise I liked quite a bit (I'm avoiding spoilers here), but its resolution felt somewhat flat. The novel kept my attention for the most part, but unfortunately its weakest section came toward the end, where it devolved into too much talking, with too much plot being revealed not by action, but by second and even third-hand accounts through dialogue. And worse, dialogue that was more summary than anything else. I'd also say the plot was harmed by one of my personal pet peeves--people just not talking to one another (at one point, I wrote as a note, "Just tell them!").

Gibson does a better job with the characters and their inter-relationships. Jerry especially is sharply formed, starting off with his introduction as a man nearly driven insane by loneliness (he spends a lot of early time talking to his dead wife). His Pathfinder mentor, Nadia, is also a strong character, and I liked his relationship with her quite a bit. I also thought Gibson did a good job presenting a diversity of characters, not just in the usual sense (racial, sexual), but also in the varied responses to the end of the world. On the downside, Jerry does fall a bit too quickly into a romantic relationship for my liking (to be fair, there is an explanation for this), and I wished for a stronger, better defined villain.

The prose style was solid; if it wasn't noticeable for any particular richness or lyricism, than it also didn't distract for worse reasons. And if Extinction Game didn't quite meet my hopes for some wildly inventive and richly detailed apocalypse-Earths, Gibson has left himself open to revisiting this group of people and this universe (s). I'd like to see what he might do with a follow-up.

An unexpectedly low energy affair

I've enjoyed all of Gibson's previous novels but this was a drab effort, lacking pace of plot, interesting characterization or even particularly challenging ideas. Indeed, the challenge I had was finishing it, so dreary was the mid-section of the novel. I was so disengaged that even though it's his "latest" novel, the lack of composure compared to those prior novels made me wonder whether it's an earlier work that has been dusted off and published on the back of his success.

Whether that's the case or not, "Extinction Game" is essentially a POV thriller based on the premise that a shadowy "Authority" plucks the literal 'last man standing' from parallel Earth's that suffered some kind of global disaster and appoints them to a search and rescue team hitting up other apocalyptic Earth's from the apparently infinite multiverse. Add in hints of internecine politics within the Authority, a complete lack of "Why" any of this is happening plus the forced teamwork of a half dozen sole survivors, and Gibson sets the scene for what could be an interesting and complex sci-fi thriller.

Instead, and despite a great opening sequence, it's almost drab. I feel that this stems from Gibson adopting that first-person viewpoint and especially because our protagonist, Jerry Beche, was not particularly engaging or likable for my taste. Gibson keeps him passive for at least half the novel and I find it difficult to really care when the main character fails to deliver much in the way of oomph to situations. By the time his dander is up and he starts punching above his weight, it was too late for me, I was by then merely plodding through to see what the story was about.

Plus, the situations are pretty lackluster. Channeling our viewpoint through Jerry limits the tension. Sure, Jerry can surmise what the others are feeling, but that is not the same as being in their heads. Which was a shame because those hints of politics could have really ratcheted things up if we were privy to them rather than riding along with Jerry. In a similar vein, most of the parallel worlds that Jerry visits are used as the set up for the mystery, rather than triggers for the mystery. It seems a minor point of difference but in terms of plot tension and the inherent mechanics of a mystery thriller, it is a crucial difference and the sad fact is that you could strip out pretty much all of the multiverse day trips and it would not collapse the heart of the story.

Finally, there was the science. Gibson typically skates pretty quickly over the 'how things work' aspect of his universes, but it seemed the ice was particularly thin in "Extinction Game". There are a few explanations later in the novel for some of the aspects of Jerry et al's hops between worlds, but for the most part I was left pondering things large and small. Gibson has written a few novels in a series - think the "The Shoal Sequence - so perhaps he'll continue Jerry's journey in a sequel, but I won't be buying it.

So, for me, this was not a comparable effort to his other work. It's expensive, I found it sadly wooden in execution, and there wasn't really a point that I could find. Two stars and no recommendation that you purchase it, it's certainly not the outcome I expected when it hit my Kindle!

Interesting tale in a new world(s)

I read an exert of this book on Tor.com and was intrigued enough to buy it.

I really liked the set up of the dystopian alternate realities and the Author was able
to play around with them in interesting ways. The characters were somewhat text book
but the main character was interesting and the way his background is revealed is well
paced.
There are a few rather large info dump chapters that I think could have been
handled a little smoother. One chapter that is handled well is a flash back while there
were a couple later on that were just characters spewing exposition at each other.
The plot twists were pretty well handled and although they were not super original
they worked out pretty well.
There are some plot threads left hanging for sequels but it is a complete story. I was
glad to not be left with a cliffhanger ending.
