Delirium is not your normal Horror-Zombie, it's an amazing graphically violent and gruesome story which does not hold back on the realistic action sequences. It is a dark and fantastic Urban Horror which takes you into the mind of the serial killer, survivors and the undead. I checked i had all my limbs after reading this superb Action Horror. Not for the faint hearted or easily offended. One of my top horror books. Read it if you DARE!!!!

Although a bit more physics than Star Trek, this latest effort from the author of Fear of Physics (LJ 10/1/93) is another worthy attempt to coax the TV generation into the esoteric realm of such abstract curiosities as wormholes, time/space curvature, quantum particles, and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The strategy of drawing on the enormous familiarity of the Star Trek universe seems natural and intriguing, and the book certainly informs and entertains-to an extent. The cultural phenomenon of Star Trek is never fully integrated into the book, as the title would imply, with fewer, briefer references and no photos from any of the films or television series that might properly be expected. Krauss does provide memorable descriptions of the immense difficulties facing the actual development of various Star Trek technologies, particularly with the prohibitive energy requirement to power starships near or past the speed of light and the rather shocking operations necessary for transporters and replicators. How Physicists Think About Star Trek Movies and Series

Did you know that many of the world's best physicists like to watch Star Trek, and then discuss what's right and wrong about the science displayed? Well, apparently they do.
Drawing on contacts within the scientific community and on-line bulletin boards, Professor Krauss has written a sprightly review of what physicists think about when they see these shows. He translates these observations into simple concepts that the average reader should be able to follow, assuming an interest in Star Trek or science.
As a non-scientist, I had always assumed that 70 percent of the "science" on a Star Trek show was just so much imagination. The reason I thought that was because I could see so many obvious errors (seeing phaser light in space, hearing sounds in space, effects occurring too soon on the space ship, holograms acting like they were made of matter, and permanent worm holes) based on what little I knew. Was I ever surprised to find out that these obvious errors were the bulk of all the errors in the shows!
Apparently the writers have been working closely with scientifically knowledgeable people to keep what is covered reasonably possible . . . along with some poetic license.
The physics of cosmology are fascinating, but I can quickly get lost in matching quantum mechanics to general relativity and so forth. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that I could follow the arguments much better when they used a familiar Star Trek episode as a reference. Like the child who learns math when it involves counting his or her own money, I can learn physics more easily when it relates to Star Trek. Very nice!
The book takes a look at the common Star Trek features like warp drive, transporters, replicators, phasers, sensors, subspace communications, and tractor beams. You also get special looks at less common features like multiple universes and special forms of radiation.
You can read this book from several perspectives as a result: (1) to appreciate what's happening in an episode; (2) to learn some science; (3) to think about where Star Trek could become real and where it is less likely to become so; and (4) what problems have to be solved in order for Star Trek technology to develop. I found the last perspective to be the most interesting. Professor Krauss's speculations about how rapidly technology might develop and what could be done with it were most fascinating.
Where the book fell down a little was in being quite strong in stating that certain "laws" of physics would never be changed. If we go back in 100 year increments, we find that a lot of earlier "laws" are later somewhat amended if not totally changed. That may happen in the future as well, as we learn more. Professor Krauss is a little too confident in many places that there is nothing else to learn. Most modern technology would look like Star Trek science fiction to someone living in 1700, despite being based on sound scientific principles not understood then.
After you finish enjoying this interesting book, think about what questions no one is trying to solve. Why not? What benefits would occur if they were solved? How could curiosity be stimulated about these questions?

Fun and enlightening

As both a Star Trek (old series) fan and popular science reader, I was greatly intrigued to see Lawrence Krauss' The Physics of Star Trek at my local bookstore. Often disappointed by past efforts to connect to the bandwagon of popular culture, I was delighted at how learned, clear, yet sprightly Krauss' short book was. In the first part, Krauss attempts nothing less than an explanation of Newtonian physics, general and special relativity, and other physics concepts to explain warp drives, tractor beams, wormholes, and other Star Trek staples that -- under the laws of physics as we now understand them -- are probably impossible. Subsequent chapters address and deconstruct the transporter beam, warp drive, etc. The clarity and humor of Krauss' writing is just wonderful. Perhaps the most amusing chapter is the last, in which Krauss lists his "top ten" Star Trek scientific bloopers -- events, plot devices, and the like that just could not occur. Because he is a trekker, Krauss does not treat these foibles with contempt or ridicule; as a scientist and writer, he ably outlines those errors.

Not too shabby...

As I looked through my local bookstore for an interesting read, I could not help but notice this interesting title in the Physics science section. Being a sporatic viewer of Star Trek myself, I picked it up for a closer look. As I read the first section of the book, I realized that it was more than blatant critique on scientific errors. Rather, it was an interesting view of future possibilities and also impossibilities in the field of science. In this book, Krauss explores the existence of things such as wormholes, black holes, and existence of other intelligent life in space. Krauss is also relentless in his discussion of Einstein and other renowned Physicists. He often writes about highly esoteric subject matter, but on the whole this book is well rounded and a relatively interesting read. However, keep in mind that one must have an interest in science, specifically fields such as quantum mechanics and relativity.

About the Author
John B. Nici has a master’s degree in art history and is retired from teaching at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, New York. He is currently a Professor of Art History at Queens College in Flushing, New York. In 2004, he was the recipient of Queens College’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty. He has published extensively on Art History pedagogy and has presented and published scholarly papers on topics that include Byzantine Art, Gothic Art, and Delacroix. He is the author of Famous Works of Art―and How They Got that Way.

Invaluable Resource

Barron's AP Art History, 3rd Edition This book covers every aspect of the AP Art History Course redesign. If you teach AP Art History you know that NO COLLEGE LEVEL TEXTBOOK includes information on each image in the new AP 250, this book does. Not only does John Nici break down each image into manageable chunks but gives a crash course in each content area. This book is an invaluable resource to both the instructor and the student.

Really good review book!!!!!

This is the best book for studying for the AP Art History exam, I would argue that it is better than the Princeton review. I was always bad with history but having this book was a great supplement and it was a much better study aid than the Princeton. What I love about this book is that it includes comprehensive quizzes at the end of each chapter so you can see where you stand. A few months before AP exam week I was extremely stressed out about the upcoming exam. I ordered this book and every day for one month, I would go to school 30 mins early and review. I would review my notes for a chapter and then read the corresponding section in the Barron's review. One month later I took the AP exam and I got a 5!. I can't stress enough how amazing this review is. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get AP credit.

Mistakes

Within the first two chapters found errors in practice exercises in Ancient New Eastern Art . There were three wrong answers on the Answer key and Answers explained. Maybe they were in hurry to get a redesign book out.

The Geopolitics Reader

The present work, undertaken by a energetic and committed group of scholars, is an effort to subject one of the sturdiest pillars of political discourse to the analysis developed by the "cultural studies revolution," many of the important repercussions of which have yet to be completely digested by mainstream political science. The bulk of the contemporary literature is still dominated by scholars who, if they have bothered to give the matter any thought at all, have reexamined the history of their fields in only the most cursory manner. Theirs is an effort to smooth the feathers of the new academic order's more vocal partisans, so that the old business of authoritative theorizing and the development of grand schemata might proceed apace. Brandishing their newly minted PC credentials, they excuse themselves and retire to the map room with their compasses and toy soldiers.
Not so Professors Tuathail, Dalby, and Routledge. They are well aware of the historical role of their discipline (geography) in shaping political relations between nations in the last century, of its complicity in two world wars and the U.S.-Soviet detente. Now, at a time when the heirs of Karl Haushofer and George Kennan are all making bids on the new geopolitical "paradigm," Tuathail et al. arrive on the scene with a profound and damning history of the whole avocation. It is to their immense credit that after being exposed to these volumes, one finds it impossible to read Foreign Affairs in quite the same light. As if by magic, the latest pronouncements of the Kissengers, the Fukuyamas, and the Huntingtons that grace the pages of that august journal strain, crack, and shatter. Turn the issue over and give it a good shake; the unexamined assumptions and base prejudices of the great statesmen fall to the floor like so many loose subscription-cards.
But lest fears of the jargon-filled, swampy postmodern style scare away potential customers, let them be assured that The Geopolitics Reader is clearly argued and immediately accessible to the interested general reader. The book, a selection of key 20th century geopolitical texts annotated and introduced by the editors, can be usefully employed in introductory courses on international relations, political theory, and political geography. Meanwhile, the novelty and import of the approach (called "critical geopolitics" by the authors) makes both the Reader and its companion volume, Rethinking Geopolitics, required reading for all advanced students of these subjects.

Twists of postmodern philosophy ...

I find Toal's book an approach worth discussing. Yet, I disagree with him on almost every single aspect on how he outlines "critical geopolitics". I found this approach not critical at all, rather deeply philosophically flawed. To anybody unfamiliar with the twists of postmodern philosophy, Toal's use of the word "geography" must seem rather comical.

So where do I possibly start? I try to comprehend (which is not easy, because Toal is not very concise): Toal outlines "critical geopolitics" in the following way: "classical geopolitics" is a problem-solving theory for the conceptualization and practice of statecraft". In contrast, critical geopolitics is a problematizing theoretical enterprise that places the existing structures of power and knowledge in question." Classical geopolitics is an unrefexively Eurocentric and narrowly rational cultural practice of `experts' in powerful Western institutions" and, therefore, Toal concludes: "geopolitics is not about power politics: it is power politics!" Toal attributes manicheism, mysticism, counter-modernism and many more features to classical geopolitics. Critical geopolitics on the other hand constructs a foreign policy that needs to be sensitive to the particularity and diversity of the world's states, and to global processes and challenges that transcend state-centric reasoning."

This is wrong for so many reasons: First, those who use geopolitical theories are have seldom been powerful at all (safe Brzesinski or Kissinger). Second, geopolitical theory does not play a very large role in the contemporary literature or in these "powerful institutions". Third, people who use the term "geopolitics" do not all mean the same. Sure, the term has a hybris with the Nazi-Geopolitik (which faded in importance after Hitler came to power), but nobody defends this theory to be valid anymore. So, isn't it rather important what people say they mean in the here and now instead of associating this position by examining the history of how it was used? Influential contemporary authors like Colin Gray, Robert D. Kaplan, Saul B. Cohen or Geoffrey Parker have very different concepts of geopolitics than the classics (e.g. Mackinder, Mahan, Spkyman) or German Geopolitik. It would make for a more powerful attack that could be deemed "critical" if Toal was to attack them. Obviously, he does not have much to say about contemporary concepts, so he writes about old-fashioned concepts and suggests the modern concepts are somewhat the same?

To a geographer, it is absolutely salient that natural inclinations (e.g. climate, surface, relief) play a large role in human history. Hardly anybody asserts that these natural factors are absolutist, as Toal repeatedly claims. Rather, they pose a challenge to or interact with the forces of human activity. A solid theory examines this interaction and does not cut off the material side from the analysis as Toal does and focuses solely on the imaginative side, i. e. what people think geography is. One can try to examine the purely imaginative or "discoursive" side, but Foucault already knew that this would gain limited knowledge about human affairs. Toal does not see the limit of his concept as Foucault did.

It is really puzzling to me how this book could become seminal in the discipline due to is limited focus and short-circuit of any material or economic dimension to human affairs. "Critical geopolitics" is a rather self-indulgent discipline which perceives itself as "dissident" or "resistant" without recognizing that in the process it became dominant in the literature.

I must say that the work of the author is impressive in the way that it gives a wide and in-depth overview of the foundations of geopolitics in a way of interesting, narrative story. The part on French geopolitics is well-written.

What a trip, very open and honest

Be a voyeur to a connoisseur of life!

Aside from learning a great deal about sexual positions and how to live and enjoy life, Steven Yang shares with his readers lots of true to life nuances like the physical build and temperament of the women he encountered in Thailand, Cambodia and The Philippines. In true artist's fashion he elaborates on the minute details of his experiences, teaching us how to be cognizant of life in all its facets. He also teaches a great deal about Southern Asian society and their women in particular. He shows an uncanny ability to quickly read a personality, something few of us men are adept at.
Steven's writing style allows one to vicariously share his voracious appetite for life. By generously allowing his readers access to some of his intimate thoughts, he shares experiences with us that we would ordinarily never have.
Overall I really enjoyed his writing style. Some of his material is peppered with humorous and poignant remarks, like when he comments about some young US solders who visited an area with seasoned working girls "they looked like they had just fallen off a cabbage truck". Many lines throughout the book are worthy of being emblazoned in bronze.
As a person, Mr. Yang seems quite the sophisticate. He has clearly been around the block many times and I'm astounded at his scope and wide grasp of many subjects.... Most importantly, he knows himself well.

I presume his portrayals were of actual events (they seem real enough) and this gives the added dimension of a guide that others can follow should they choose to. In fact he teaches throughout the book, from tidbits of Thai language to locations and much more. A virtual treasure trove of information!

At times interesting, but never erotic

I bought this book after it was included in a search for men's erotica here on Amazon (of which there seems to be a lack of for straight guys).

The book started off well and it was really interesting learning about the bars and what goes on over there as well as the people he meets and the places he goes.

After that the book gets repetitive with the author getting up, finding a girl, bringing her back to his hotel, doing her, him going to sleep, and then doing it all again the next day. Many times the sex scenes were not that descriptive and sometimes very short - I suspect because the author has done so many girls it is nothing special to him anymore.

Finally when he goes to Cambodia it gets interesting again for a little while because he describes the places that he goes and the people he meets, then it gets in to that "Ground Hog Day-ness" with him just getting a girl, shagging her, and then doing it all again the next day.

After Cambodia he goes back to Thailand where more of the same happens until near the end of the book where he starts describing just going to the beach meeting groups of girls, talking with, and having parties with them.

Note that the author never travels to the Philippines, he has a paid for girlfriend over there and whenever he got a crappy coc sucking he would mention her and how well she did it.

While sometimes interesting I did not find this book erotic at all; it does not contain any elements needed for eroticism, there is no longing, no sexual tension, no naughtyness - it's all paid for and far too easy. If you are easily turned on then this book might do it for you, but I found myself far more turned on by the descriptions of nakedness and sex in books by the likes of Wilbur Smith.

I actually stopped reading this book twice, because there is no real plot you can quite easily do this - there is nothing to make you read "just one more chapter" before you go to sleep, which for some people might be a good thing.

Printing and binding was all good.
