About the Author

Kim S. Elliott BTech, PhD, CEng, MICE is a self-employed consultant to the precast industry in the UK and Malaysia. He was Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at Nottingham University, UK, from 1987 to 2010, and was formerly at Trent Concrete Structures Ltd, one of the UK’s leading precast concrete manufacturers. Since 1987, he has been active in research into the behaviour of precast concrete structures and has published more than 120 papers and 6 text books. He is a member of the FIB UK Group and FIB Commission on Prefabrication.

Colin K. Jolly MSc, PhD, CEng, MICE, FIStructE is a self-employed consultant to Cranfield University and the construction industry. He was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Southampton University, UK, from 1978 to 1999, and in the Engineering Systems Department at the Royal Military College of Science (now the Defence Academy) from 2000-2006, having formerly worked for Consulting Engineers in the UK and Oman. Since 1975, he has been active in research into the behaviour of a wide variety of composite materials in structures, and has published more than 280 papers and industrial reports. He is a member of the UK Expert Group providing recommendations for the evolution of the European loading code EN 1990.

Great read that will cause you reevaluate the way you see interact with others.

Purchased this book after attending a book talk with the author at a local community group with Blacks and Jews. After reading the book I found myself reevaluating how I interact with people from other cultures. The author is exceptionally good at telling stories that help you see life from other people's perspectives.This book can be appreciated by people of all ages, I think it should be apart of every high school's curriculum. After reading this book I have become aware of the things I say and have incorporated the 25 habits talked about in the book into my daily interactions. I recommend this book to all.

This book helped me to examine my hidden biases and live a more open, caring life.

I have read this book twice and I always find new ideas to help me in my search to live more consciously. Now that I am retired and have more free time I have set out re-educate myself. My main concerns are why do we have such a difficult time understanding and loving one another. I wanted to have a solid framework to talk with others of different religions and races and see if we could have common ground for open, respectful conversations. I want to really listen and understand others and this book helped me with that goal. Verna Myers wants us to explore our biases so we can live more fully and lovingly in this world and she does this brilliantly.

A must read for creating inclusion, and not simply diversity

I saw Verna present recently at a conference for my professional society, and received this book on 25 Habits for being culturally effective there. I read the entire book in one go on my flight home, and found myself nodding in agreement as well as noticing immediately where I can improve as I read through it. As a female research scientist, and minority in my field, I resonated so much with the message of this book.

Although some of the points raised in this book were familiar to me (e.g. the cumulative weight of micro-inequities, the lack of diverse role models for minorities to look up to, the feeling of not being fully included), they were presented in a refreshing, humble, and humorous way. Verna openly admits the challenge (even her own challenge!) of saying and doing the right things in moments where inequities are surfaced. She makes it clear that this dialogue is not about feeling ashamed of your privileges in life, but is about acknowledging those privileges and choosing to advocate for an inclusive culture.

I highly recommend this book for its practical examples of how each of us can contribute to creating an inclusive culture at work and in our society. This is a must read for anyone who wants to transition, as Verna puts it, from simply well-meaning to well-doing.

First copyright of this book is 1962, but for the price this is an excellent book for your library. Advances in propulsion and flight controls mean that you may not find exactly what you want in this book, but it will be a great starting point.

About the Author
Neal Kinsey grew up in southeast Missouri and worked on the farm for his father until he graduated from high school. To make his way through college, he worked part-time and summers as a crop reporter for the USDA's ASCS in Missouri and Illinois. He obtained his B.S. degree in marketing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In the fall of 1966, Kinsey enrolled in a master's degree program in Food Industry Logistics in Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Here is where he first met Dr. William A. Albrecht, who later provided the technical training in soil fertility required by his present profession. In 1968 Kinsey moved to Texas and took a job with a large environmental research project conducted by Ambassador College at Big Sandy. He eventually became assistant to the Director. Later, he became business manager followed by agricultural operations manager for the Ambassador College Agriculture Department. While serving in this! capacity, he became a certified consultant for Brookside Farms Laboratory of New Knoxville, Ohio. In 1977 he established Kinsey Agricultural Services. His workshops and seminars take him all around the world to train hundreds of growers in soil balancing utilizing cation exchange specializing in building and maintaining soil for quality crop production.

It makes sense!

At a guess the reviewer "A reader from New York" has never had anything to do with soils and farming. He/she just eats the end products.
I am a farmer in Australia dealing with some of the hardest yet some of the most potentially productive soils as any in the USA. This book was recommended to me by a fellow farmer. After reading it I was stunned as to how much sense it made. I can now relate soil test data to what I see in the field and understand why some areas always produce more than others. It's not "quackery" when you can understand how mother nature and basic chemistry allow some areas of a field to outperform others by sometimes 3-1.
Readers of this book should be farmers who are willing to take a close look at their soils, work the numbers, think about it and then be prepared to accept what they WILL see in it all.
I am by no means an organic farmer, I still use some commercial fertilizers and spray about as much as anyone. After reading this book I have started working on balancing the soil because I see from experience the most balanced soils producing the best crops.
I don't really care if Neal Kinsey has a consulting practice on soils. And as far as the book being a bit "light on" for detail is concerned, well it's not. It is a great first step to understanding the soil we grow things in. Fertilizer brouchures are light on for detail.

Mr. Kinsey gets it right

Attending one of Mr. Kinsey's seminars and visiting with the farmers who have implemented his programs will convince the most staunch skeptic. His concept of "Feeding the soil and let the soil feed the plant" makes perfect sense. All elements in the soil must be within specific parameters for any plant to grow and produce to its full potential. Too much of the research results and recommendations that are available are tied to some corporate sponsorship that is ultimately tied to a product they wish to sell whether it is needed or not. Mr. Kinsey's success in 50 states and 50 countries speaks for itself. If you are a serious steward of the land and intend to stay in business in agriculture this book will help you get the not only more yield but higher quality products from your operation.

Agonomy or info-mmercial?

The author has a soil consultation service, and one does not have to read too many pages before one realizes that all that has been read so far is self-aggrandizment, and this continues throughout the book. The author makes the same claims that are heard or read in advertisments for quack products: State and/or university soil testing facilities produce inaccurate results because they cut corners in testing or return stock answers to stock analyses; but; the lab the author uses is 100% accurate. Growers who use the author's recommendations have increased crop yields by X%, with X depending upon the crop in question. All claimed increases are substantial.
The author includes just enough factual material on soils to give the book an air of authority, but is very short on any explanation or reason for the importance of these soil factors (other than humus). The whole book seems to be a many-paged advertisement for people to use his service.
Those interested in the subject might better spend their money on a good soils textbook.

Realty Tax & Cost Segregation/Apportionment

Very good. Covers all bases and in language that 'non-tax' professionals in construction/property sectors can also read and understand. This is the real value of this text, for people (i.e. Cost Consultants, Quantity Surveyors, etc.) with no tax credentials but who are curious to understand what we 'tax folk' are 'on about', this text is a must read (without being too technical). A good text to 'join the dots' between Cost Consultants/QS and tax professionals. Hard cover is excellent, as too the 'inter-active' web site reference. So popular is this text with my non-tax colleagues, that one inter-State based senior executive "borrowed" the book (a few months ago), requests for its return politely declined (for now). The CCH text is also very good and better suited to tax professionals keen to read legilsative references and case law. Both texts are very worthy acquisitions (as are others, I'm sure).

Dr. Jay E. Adams is Director of Advanced Studies and Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. He received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, his B.D. from the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary, his S.T.M. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. In addition to having served as a pastor and then a Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Dr. Adams has been the Dean of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, Laverock, Pennsylvania, since its founding in the early 1970s. He has written over fifty books, translated the New Testament into English (The Christian Counselor’s New Testament), and lectured throughout the world. His books deal with many aspects of pastoral ministry and counseling as well as Bible study and practical Christian living

About the Author

Jay E. Adams (PhD, University of Missouri) is a former director of advanced studies and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, as well as a retired pastor. He has written over fifty books on pastoral ministry, preaching, counseling, Bible study, and Christian living. His books include Competent to Counsel, The Christian Counselor’s Manual, and Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible.

A Handbook for Pastors

Essentially a handbook for pastors as well as a textbook for students of pastoral ministry, the work is divided into three sections: Pastoral Life which deals with the calling and general life of the pastor, Pastoral Counseling and Pastoral Leadership. This is an exhaustive without being exhausting as we are treated to an extensive tour of all of the different areas of ministry.

There is a two-fold perspective at work as Adams directs his book both to those pastors already in church ministry as well as to those who are preparing for such ministry. The approach presented is of the leader who acts as a motivator and director for other leaders within the church. "The pastor should repeatedly ask himself, `Is there someone else who could do this job?' and `Can someone else help me do this (or a part of it)'" (Page 416). Delegation is pictured throughout as the key to growing, healthy churches. But this delegation is not random or happenstance. It will be successful only insofar as it is planned. Otherwise it will not happen, or worse, it will happen in a shoddy manner.

Adams' insistence that pastors should do nearly all of their own counseling in conjunction with lay-counselors and that they should avoid referring their parishioners to counselors outside of their own local church seems to be extreme.

Adam's advice for bringing about elder participation into the ministry of the church is to "start small. Begin with some easily attainable short-term goal, to take a step in the right direction.. Find persons who are ready to cooperate or who could be successfully challenged to do so and start with them." (Page 194). This is a good formula for bringing any type of change into a church.

"A church that makes no attempt to promote Christian communication will discover that communication will take place anyway. To state the problem simply: if the communication that exists is not carefully established and maintained as Christian communication, then the sort of communication that develops will tend to be non-Christian communication; gossip, slander, half-truths will flow quickly along the grapevine." (Page 380).

The book does not go into great detail for every subject, but it is meant to be a general outline that directs pastors and ministers to further studies in areas they may need more extensive instructions. Recommended for anyone interested in Church Leadership roles.
