Wagram - Another Classic Must Have from Hourtoulle

This is my second review of a book by F. -G. Hourtoulle on the Napoleonic wars and I'm happy to write that 'Wagram - The Apogee of the Empire' is another of those must-have's for any wargamer or person with an interest in the Napoleonic wars. For the wargamer, the beauty of this book lies in two things. The first is the beautifully detailed drawings in exquisite colour of the uniforms of the combatants at the battle. Words do not do justice to the quality of the pictures. The second is the orders of battle done for each side and their allies. I'm an Austrian 15mm wargamer who enjoys those games where you get to deploy the entire force on a table in a game. Hourtoulle delivered in this book an Austrian order of battle that details the battalions I need for each of my brigades, divisions and Corps, with photo's showing how the regiments should be painted. For French and their allies players, the news is even better; not only does Hourtoulle present the colour plates needed to guide the painting of your troops, he also adds intricate details on French officers and the line regiments in each brigade. Included is the usual quality work done by Hourtoulle to describe the course of the battle, the casualties and the ebb and flow of events. 'Wagram - The Apogee of the Empire' may not be absolutely encyclopaedic in its details of the Austrian forces deployed, but for anyone interested in one of the largest battles of the Napoleonic wars this is a must have. For wargamers, you will long regret not buying a copy of this book as a source of reference for your collection.

Excellent uniform illustrations, but a questionable read.

This book is highly recommended (especially for wargamers) if you're looking for uniform illustrations, with hundreds provided for various regiments of all branches and officers as well as paintings depicting various parts of the battle. However, the translation was not well edited and does not provide useful details (for example, Orders of Battle) that I suspect most history buffs and wargamers would want. Overall, it provides a basic overview of the battle and campaign. If you're looking for a detailed battle or campaign history, you will want to look elsewhere (Osprey campaign series #33, Aspern & Wagram 1809).

About the Author

Charles T. Horngren is the Edmund W. Littlefield Professor of Accounting, Emeritus, at Stanford University. A graduate of Marquette University, he received his MBA from Harvard University and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He is also the recipient of honorary doctorates from Marquette University and DePaul University.

A Certified Public Accountant, Horngren served on the Accounting Principles Board for six years, the Financial Accounting Standards Board Advisory Council for five years, and the Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for three years. For six years, he served as a trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation, which oversees the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Government Accounting Standards Board.

Horngren is a member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

A member of the American Accounting Association, Horngren has been its President and its Director of Research. He received its first annual Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

The California Certified Public Accountants Foundation gave Horngren its Faculty Excellence Award and its Distinguished Professor Award. He is the first person to have received both awards.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants presented its first Outstanding Educator Award to Horngren.

Horngren was named Accountant of the Year, Education, by the national professional accounting fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi.

Professor Horngren is also a member of the Institute of Management Accountants, where he received its Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the Institute's Board of Regents, which administers the Certified Management Accountant examinations.

Gary L. Sundem is the Julius A. Roller Professor of Accounting and Co-Chair of the Department of Accounting at the University of Washington, Seattle. He received his B.A. degree from Carleton College and his MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University.

Professor Sundem was the 1992-93 President of the American Accounting Association. He was Executive Director of the Accounting Education Change Commission, 1989-91, and served as Editor of The Accounting Review, 1982-86.

A member of the National Association of Accountants, Sundem is past president of the Seattle chapter. He has served on NAA's national Board of Directors, the Committee on Academic Relations, and the Research Committee.

Professor Sundem has numerous publications in accounting and finance journals including Issues in Accounting Education, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, and The Journal of Finance. He was selected as the Outstanding Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association in 1998 and by the Washington Society of CPAs in 1987. He has made more than 150 presentations at universities in the United States and abroad.

John A. Elliott is Associate Dean and Professor of Accounting at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He received his B.S. and MBA degrees from the University of Maryland and his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University.

A certified public accountant, Elliott worked for Arthur Andersen & Co. and for Westinghouse before returning for his advanced degrees. He currently teaches financial accounting and international accounting at the Johnson School. Prior teaching experience has included auditing and taxation as well as intermediate accounting and financial statement analysis. With over 25 years as an educator, Professor Elliott has taught at the University of Maryland, St. Lawrence University, Central Washington State College, and the University of Chicago. In addition to executive teaching for Cornell, he has conducted various corporate training programs in the United States and internationally.

As a member of the American Accounting Association, he was the founding president of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section. As a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Committee he frequently responded to FASB exposure drafts and worked to integrate academic study with practice. His research has been published in accounting and economics journals and deals primarily with the use of accounting information to assess the financial condition of an enterprise.

Professor Elliott served on the Hangar Theatre Board of Trustees for nine years, and was president for four of those years. He also served on the Board of the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca for nine years and was president for the final three years.

Used it in place of my assigned financial accounting book...

NYU's Stern School Of Business uses this book and its a well-crafted introduction to financial accounting. While taking accounting at the other New York business school, I deep sixed my assigned accounting book and instead borrowed my wife's. It coverage of topics and pedagogical flow are quite approachable and manageable. Struggling friends begain to purchase it for themselves. An excellent book. An interesting book as well. Case examples and references keep things interesting. Not just dry rules.

Great book for Engineers

This book was part of our text for the MBA program. Being an Engineer having no background in Accounting, this easy to understand book has been very helpful. The chapters build upon one another. One topic naturally leads to the other. The practice problems at the end of the chapter are very good for cementing the learning. The book is scattered with lots of real life examples and problems representing real companies. Buy this book with the solutions manual.

Awesome template for social pitfalls and awkward situations

I have a son with Asperger's, which makes social situations more difficult for him to navigate. This book is an excellent how-to for anyone who needs a little instruction for making it in the social world (everybody). Some of the chapters will have to wait until older (dating age), but it's a great resource for current and future interactions for socially adapt and socially clueless alike.

Great book, but it falls just a bit short.

This book is great for any guy that wants to be more of a gentleman. It goes through many social situations (some awkward, some day-to-day) and how a gentleman would appropriately deal with them. For the most part, these tips are accurate and handy, but most of them are just plain common sense. There are also some questionable answers in here, and highly situational ones that cannot really be answered solidly for everyone. For the low price, it's great!

Petrified wood from the United States resides in museums worldwide, yet most Americans know little about the subject. I wanted to publish a book that would present photographs of some of the world's most beautiful and interesting specimens and also explain how these miraculous fossils form in such a vast array of colors and mineralization. Over the past several years I traveled thousands of miles and shot more than 7,500 photographs to produce this book. I also spent many late evening hours researching. The book's editors are recognized experts in their fields. Dr. Brooks Britt is Curator for Paleontology at The Museum of Western Colorado and Mr. Dayvault is a professional geologist with a long-standing involvement in the study of western minerals and fossils.

I hope that the quality of materials and construction are readily apparent. The paper is 100# glossy bond. While most mineral and fossil books have only small sections printed in full color, this book is 100% full color. The large format (the pages are 9" by 12") is well justified by the size of the photographs. We wasted no space in producing this book. Details such as the full color, printed end sheets are expensive additions, but well worth it in my opinion. Please remove the dust jacket to view the gold embossed design on the hard cover. Printing and binding the book entirely in the USA was also an expense with clearly visible dividends. Since the printing was done in my hometown of Grand Junction, Colorado, I could monitor every step of the process. The photographs were all shot on a fine grain, slow speed professional film (Fuji Velvia, rated at ISO 40) without the use of color-enhancing filters other than a polarizer. We spent many hours color correcting to ensure that the pictures in the book match the colors in the original transparencies.

I hope you will agree with me that this book fills a void. Get on the Internet at www.amazon.com and search for petrified wood - of 2,500,000 titles available none were available on petrified wood until now. Check the library of Congress or any other library system catalog with the same results. You will find some textbooks on paleobotany that address petrified materials in technical, dry terms, and you will see a few books about Petrified Forest National Park and similar places, but you will not find a book like this. That is why I wrote it.

About the Author
Frank J. Daniels holds a degree in History from the University of Denver and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has served as the elected District Attorney for Colorado's 21st Judicial District in Western Colorado and is a member and immediate past president of the Grand Junction Gem and Mineral Club.

Brooks B. Britt was Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Western Colorado. He holds degrees from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary. Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous dinosaurs are his primary field of research.

Richard D. Dayvault earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology from East Carolina University, is a registered geologist, and is involved professionally in environmental remedial action work. Mr. Dayvault has been a consulting editor for Rocks and Minerals magazine for 25 years and has authored numerous papers on the geology and paleontology of Western Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. He is a member of the Grand Junction Geological Society, the Uncompahgre Plateau Paleontology Society, Friends of Mineralogy, and the Grand Junction Gem and Mineral Club.

Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood

The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

PETRIFIED WOOD by Frank J Daniels

This is a beautiful volume that is a visual treat for any enthusiast in the area of geology, paleontology, rocks and minerals. It's an attractive "coffee table" book replete with page after page of gorgeous color plates of the world's loveliest petrified wood specimens. There are also text portions that explain the geology and history of the fossilized wood. Some of the paleobiological terms are quite technical. It's not for everyone, but the book is beautiful for those with eyes that find fascination in ancient trees that have now turned to mineralized stone.

Can they be that beautiful?

Iy you are a layman, you will certainly ask whether "rock like " items like these can be so pretty. When you read on and understand that nature is actually the artist behind them, then you will start to appreciate that their brilliant color, the pretty pattern as well as the variety of what used to be living trees in this planet millions of years ago are not any less beautiful than the common gems and precious stones which we are much more familiar with. The excellent photos will certainly tempt one to read the book again and again . The only regret is perhaps the lack of more publications on these gems, despite a second and equally attractive book by the same author.

Hope it's summer!!

While there are several cute patterns in this book, I think it would be nice to know that there are only a few for each size. All my favorite patterns in here are for 3-9 months. Then there is a section with 1-2 year patterns. There is only a few patterns that fit 3-5 year olds, and my daughters were 2 and 4 when I bought this so I was kinda bummed. The recommended fabric length is odd, because it recommends fabric for one size, (for example, one yard for a size 1) but if you are doing a different size (say, size 2) you have to figure out how much fabric to buy on your own. I really wish some of these patterns were bigger! I also think it should be noted that the majority of these items do not have sleeves, so if you live in an area with cooler weather this is not the book for you!

Disappointing

I received this book as a gift and was excited to finally have time to use it. I chose the Millefiori pattern in size 9 months, traced and cut the patterns, and got to work. However, what I quickly discovered after a number of hours of work was that the pant leg patterns just didn't match up. I quadruple-checked my work to make sure I'd cut the right patterns and I had. I fudged through the pant portion and continued. Then, I found that the bodice and pant portion didn't match up, forcing me to put gathers on the sides (which are mostly hidden due to the skirt portion of the outfit). When all was said and done, after many modifications to the pattern to make everything line up, the outfit didn't fit my small daughter. The modifications I had to make to the pants put the crotch up too high so the shoulder straps pull very tightly.

Another minor negative are the directions. There were some points where I had to infer directions if it didn't state something explicitly.

I gave the book 2 stars because it has some really cute patterns. But don't expect to go through this pattern without modifications.

I can't speak to any other patterns in this book.

Cute clothes, and mostly easy to follow directions

I bought this book weeks ago with the intention of making clothes for my son from it, as well as making baby clothes to give to a homeless shelter for pregnant women. I have made several of the infant projects (bought a roll of tracing paper at the local art supply store and traced out a piece for each size, b/c that's easier for me). I have made the dress on the cover, the shorts on page 9, the overalls on pg 12 (by the most complicated piece for me), the dress on pg 20, and the dress on pg 24. There were a couple of times I tossed out the directions and did the sewing my way; which was easier than the way the directions wanted it done. The double crosser dress would have been more complicated had not been experienced in sewing shopping bags to look like their plastic counterparts. Did notice that in a few patterns there really wasn't enough diagrams, and some how-to-do's were glossed over. Sewing wise I am somewhere between novice and low level intermediate. I can sew, and follow directions....but I can't do too many fancy things (and yes, zippers mess me up almost every time), that's just to FYI where my skill level is coming from. As to the comments about all the infant pieces being no sleeves, I recommend pairing the jumpers with long sleeved onesies or shirts for cooler to cold days. Also, I don't make the clothes to look exactly like they are in the book. I don't really want to copy what they did, that was cute yes; but doesn't always fit with the fabric(s) I have on hand...all of which were made using remnants. I have yet to buy more than a 1 yard to make anything. But now that I've traced out the larger clothes I suspect that will need to change. It's still a solid book for making kids clothes.
