This is an amazing and adventurous book with wide coverage of core issues in the research methods that are commonly used in many social sciences. The coverage is in-depth and of world-class quality. The examples used are fascinating and perhaps reflect the origins of some authors outside academia, ranging from general practitioner to counsellor and photographer. I was very impressed with the deep analysis of the philosophy of science which was presented in a useful way. Simple topics like sampling and testing hypotheses are covered in highly readable manner. Complex topics like discourse analysis are made easy through the use of short examples based on real-life interviews. The coverage of qualitative methods in a series of chapters is conveniently presented. Each chapter can be read independently. Some other chapters have been moved to an online free access mode, while new chapters have also been added for this edition. The links to online resources are extremely convenient and there are exercises and questions for review with each chapter. The book is highly enjoyable and, through the collaboration of its authors, offers much more value for money than the reader expects

Great book..

This book is very informative in explaining the procedures in creating a great research paper or project. I purchased this book primarily because it was required; I am a student a Nova Southeastern University and I love doing research, so I enrolled in a research class(online). Also, while being in this particular class, I am required to do a proposal; the book goes in-depth in creating a proposal that is worthwhile and able to communicate my thoughts/views in the topic with clarity. Furthermore, Amazon.com was the only resource that had this book for a decent price, so I couldn't beat that. In addition, I am a prime-student, so that makes all the differences in the world, especially with free shipping and the book was delivered in two-days. Overall, great book!

About the Author
Peggy N. Kerley is a contract litigation paralegal, working with the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, and a former paralegal instructor at Southeastern Paralegal Institute, in Dallas, Texas. She has more than 45 years of legal experience. Ms. Kerley received her undergraduate degree in political economy from the University of Texas at Dallas, and her paralegal certificate from the University of Oklahoma. She is also the author of another paralegal text, Employment Law for the Paralegal.

Joanne Banker Hames, J.D., is a retired Paralegal Coordinator and full-time instructor for the paralegal program at DeAnza Community College located in Cupertino, California. She is currently a part-time instructor at the school. She earned her J.D. degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and was admitted to the California Bar in January 1972. She has been an active member since that time. For several years Ms. Hames was employed as an attorney in a busy litigation law firm. During that time she was involved in all aspects of civil litigation, including pre-trial preparation, jury trials, and appeals. For the past fourteen years she has been involved primarily in paralegal education, teaching at DeAnza Community College and previously at Santa Clara University Paralegal Institute.

Paul Sukys, J.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy, Law, and Legal Studies at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at Ashland University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Dr. Sukys received his bachelor's and master's degrees from John Carroll University in Cleveland, his law degree from Cleveland State University, and his doctorate in philosophy from The Union Institute and University in Cincinnati. He is a member of the Ohio Bar, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum, the National Business Education Association, the Society for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Lakeside Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle.

About the Author
Dr. Joe McCullough began teaching physics at Cabrillo College near Santa Cruz, CA more than thirteen years ago. He soon found himself concerned by the number of students experiencing test-taking anxiety and other school-related phobias. Could anything be done to help them? Joe began studying the brain and Neuro-Linguistic Programming - eventually becoming a certified Destination Coach - determined to make a difference. Little did he know, this desire to resolve school-related anxieties was only the beginning of a decade-long fascination with the brain and how people learn!

Today, Joe is Cabrillo College's Physics Program Chair. He has undergone hundreds of hours of training in neuroscience, accelerated learning techniques, and brain-based teaching methods. He's also a certified trainer and former facilitator for SuperCamp and Quantum Learning Network.

In his spare time, Joe is a dedicated husband, father, avid outdoorsman, and amateur magician.

After his workshop I bought 3 copies!!!

To start off, this is not the normal kind of thing I do or sign up for. I'm a 21 year old college student that works 2 jobs with virtually no time to spare. A professor of mine (that worked with him) recommended his workshop and his book. Had it not been for the promise of extra credit I never would have made time for it. But boy howdee am I happy I went! Using his techniques I cut my study time in half, I learn more while I'm in lecture, and I'm more productive at work. Thank You Joe!

GREAT FOR NURSING STUDENTS!

ATTENTION ALL NURSING PREREQS STUDENTS!
This is a great book. I am now in a nursing program; and regret to say that I found this too late. Had I found this book when I was taking my A&P prereqs, I can’t imagine how my present path would be.
This was a great read. I did it in two sittings. It’s worth the investment and please don’t hesitate the purchase. Dr. McCullough’s writing style is straight-forward and immensely enjoyable. As a result of it being an enjoyable experience, you will be able to apply it right after you put the book down (you’ll see what I mean after you read the book). Good luck to all in your A&P courses.

ATTENTION ALL NURSING STUDENTS!
This book should be part of every nursing student’s acceptance package, because you will understand how to study better.

For those that are in a program but are struggling, don’t hesitate to make the purchase. I promise, you won’t regret it.

Grade 9 Up-Henry David Thoreau's classic, first published in 1854 and reporting on his experiences at the eponymous site where he lived in physical and social independence during the mid-1840's, receives refreshing treatment here. William Hope reads leisurely but with feeling, offering listeners the illusion that the author is speaking directly to them. The abridgements are not substantive, so listeners will feel that they have become acquainted with the complexities of a text that is both orderly and sprinkled with irony and other literary devices. The chapters are tastefully set off by musical interludes that complement Thoreau's own rhythms. Not only is this an excellent alternative for students assigned to read the text that is often offered in tiny print without benefit of margins, but it is also possible to suggest this to thoughtful teens who are seeking an intellectually engaging listening experience for their personal enjoyment. Hope's pacing invites readers with minimal skills to accompany their print foray with his narration. The careful editing here assures that they will not become lost between page and sound.

Review of ANNOTATED EDITION, not of Thoreau's work

Review of ANNOTATED EDITION, not of Thoreau's work. Potentially great idea. Many of the annotations were superficial or unnecessary, although others helpful. Biggest problem with this is the printer's layout, which has two careless oversights: size and position on page. Two pages of text have been squeezed onto a single page (to allow the side-by-side commentary), resulting in tiny print. Tough on anyone over 40. Then, the printer left wide margins on the *outside* of the page, and squeezed Thoreau's text into the binding. Really foolish use of the available space.

The result is something that could have been fascinating being just plain awkward and unsatisfying to handle and read.

Timeless Advice & Thought-Provoking Perspectives to Help Us “Suck out all the marrow of life”

Great book packed with timeless advice, thought-provoking perspectives, and a surprising amount of humor. Everyone can benefit from reading this book because it offers ideas and concepts that can help us live deeper and more fulfilling lives.

In a quest to “suck out all the marrow of life”, Thoreau lived alone in the woods for 2 years and wrote this powerful book during his time there. Thoreau preaches to simplify our lives to free ourselves from the chains of our material possessions (the more stuff we have, the more we need to work to pay for it), allowing us the free time to truly enjoy life. He lived by a set of moral values and refused to compromise them, leading him to develop the concept of civil disobedience, which later inspired Gandhi and Martin Luther King. He ate a mostly vegan diet and believed that "it is the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals." He preached taking the time to genuinely appreciate the beauty of nature (the earth is “living poetry”). He also encouraged reading the classics (we may be able to “scale heaven” with the great works of the past), taking time to get to know ourselves (“be the Lewis and Clarke of your own streams and oceans”), avoiding newspapers (“I never read any memorable news in a newspaper”), and ensuring that new technologies truly add value before we adopt them (“our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things…they are an improved means to an unimproved end”).

It’s a bit ironic that I’m boasting about Thoreau on Amazon.com from my relatively large home -- two things that he may not have approved of. Not sure if I used the word “ironic” correctly -- Alanis Morissette and I throw that word around recklessly.

printed on demand?

The copy I received has "LEXINGTON, KY" and the date I ordered it printed inside the back cover. I believe Amazon is not keeping these books IN-STOCK but are printing each copy as it is ordered. No copyright or edition information is printed at the front of the book and no ISBN or barcode is visible on the outside. I feel this is a curiosity and does not detract from the text in any way. THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT! Amazon should just make buyers aware before purchase.

I have not read Thoreau before and did not finish reading this text. I had a hard time enjoying his rambling prose and opining about wealth and society. I was excited to begin reading about stark living and proof evidence that a person can live entirely self sustaining with little to no input from outside society. But the more I read I was able to understand that this is not was he meant at all. He wanted a life sustained by others' prosperity by an existence of taking. I think he might have started off well intended and maybe the remainder that I didn't finish could prove me wrong. I just bore easily of a person's complaining without action to make repairs. Thoreau was better than most in building a homestead and nearly thriving from it, but a large portion of my ancestors did that too, and they weren't doing it to write any books. They were just LIVING.
