A must-read book for every woman
By A Customer
I am able to say that because I myself experienced married to a man that fits 90 % of what Dr. Dan Kiley described in his book. When I got divorced from my husband, I was very shocked and could not believe of what had happened to me. I visited andrologist, priest, psychologist, psychiatrist just trying to understand `why' and `how' till I found a book called `Peter Pan Syndrome'. I bought the book because the title attracted my attention. When I read it, I was surprised that every detail Dr. Kiley described helped me understand how could that unbelievable experience happened without me being aware to any of it. It is probably difficult for anybody who has never experienced it to understand but for me it does help me quite a lot. Thank to Dr. Kiley for his marvellous work.

Written for Patients
By A Customer
Of all I've read on Narcicism and relationships, this book is the best I've found. Most of the literature that I've seen is tailored for professionals, but this is written specifically for patients, their families and their partners. Kiley uses developmental specifics and case studies to create a usable image for those trying to understand narcicism and how it manifests itself in adolescents and adults. I highly reccomend it to anyone with an interest in this area.

In a culture with Son worship, the males never grow up
By A Customer
"In a culture with Son worship, the males never grow up and the Feminine is denigrated." (Margaret Starbird, The Woman with the Alabaster Jar) It doesn't matter that the book may be "unscientific." Just test the hypothesis against any of the immature 40-year old males that you know and you'll see that most of what the author says fits! Life provides the necessary scientific evidence! This book is a must-read for any woman who has had to deal with an immature male at the head of an institution. It will help you understand that you, as woman, are not the problem--the immature male is. However, the book can help you to discern where you are enabling the male's immaturity and dismissing it as "boys will be boys!" It's through women's awareness of this issue, and our willingness to no longer support the behavior, that these males will eventually grow. As long as they have admiring females around them worshipping their immaturity, they will always be Peter Pans.

Eloise, we love you too!
By A Customer
HONEY, I LOVE and other love poems is simply put, one of the all-time best books of poetry ever written - and it is loved and enjoyed by adults as well as children. Eloise Greenfield's poetry is full of wisdom, simplicity, and elegance. The title poem reflects a childhood any child would be privileged to have - a "flying pool," a cousin from the South whose words just kinda "slide" out of his mouth, a Mama whose arm is for holding her child...and for being kissed. What more could anyone need? The other poems are brilliant as well - especially HARRIET TUBMAN who didn't "take no stuff." This poem, in fact, is an anthem for school children everywhere, who love a hero and aspire to be one as well. Poetry doesn't get any better than the stuff that comes out of Eloise Greenfield's experiences, heart, and pen. As an author and teacher myself, I admire the timeless nature and awesome craftwork in this book, and I share it every chance I get. Honey, you'll love it!

Pure, Beautiful Poetry for Any Age
By Amy Senk
This book is a must for any child's bookcase, particularly if one wants to rear a child who is sensitive, racially tolerant and in tune with the beauty of language.

These poems are of pure emotion: love, joy, loss, bravery, silliness. The voice is childlike but amazingly profound as the poems cover a squeaky school piano, a Southern cousin whose every word "just kind off slides out of his mouth" and the complete abandon one feels when dancing deep in the music of Earth, Wind and Fire.

My favorite two poems are a bit more serious. In "Keepsake," Greenfield uses just nine simple lines to convey loss, and the impact adults can have on children. This is not a maudlin poem that is too heavy or upsetting. Although it deals with death, it's respectful and loving. And the poem "Harriet Tubman" is amazing, deftly describing the woman's heroics and bravery in a satisfying and strong verse.

Honey, I Love is a thought-provoking work that stands the test of time. It's a book that adults and children can, and should, enjoy together.

could have been a much better book
By K2
The content of the book, at least by index, is great, if you can find where it is before your patience run out. My only complain of this book, or the style that it was written, is it has way too much garbage in front of any real essence. For example, when it talks about endurance training, after 30 minutes of nonsense reading I still have no clue what the author was really trying to say.
I highly recommend another book "Mountaineering, the freedom of the hills". Concise, no BS, right to the point. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any section talking about training.

You need this book
By Amazon Customer
Esperanto textbooks handle the Correlatives badly. Either they show all 45 of them in one 5x9 grid with short English translations or they introduce them in subsets based on either the prefixes or suffixes. The use of Correlatives in word construction is spread randomly over the rest of the textbook. The differences between the model used in Esperanto and other languages is seldom mentioned. In short, you never get a whole picture of the Esperanto correlative system.

This book has none of those flaws. It organizes the discussion by the prefixes and by the suffixes that build Correlatives. Auxiliary words like ajn and ĉi get good coverage. The sample texts are well translated with commentary. The only flaw is that the typesetting on Kindle has some minor problems: Ŭ is shown as an acute accent mark and some of the pagination is awkward in places. This is easy to fix.

An Excellent Book
By Alex M
This book helped me memorize and fully understand the correlative table (i.e. tie, tiel, tiu, tiam) more quickly and more thoroughly than I was able to with either my flash cards app (Intense EO) or with the main e-book I've been using to learn the language, "The Esperanto Teacher" by Helen Fryer. Both are very useful in other ways but this book really fleshes out how to look at the correlatives through a variety of approaches. That repetition helps ingrain the concepts very quickly. The examples used are fun and memorable and thoroughly explained and translated.

Don't let the strange pigs on the cover fool you. This book is a great addition for any aspiring Esperanto speaker and is very easy to follow. We need more Esperanto resources like this one on the Kindle!

Interesting And Useful For The Beginner
By Stephen Mann
Not quite what I was expecting in the way the content is arranged, the correlatives are presented as use cases in conversational and anecdotal form, with the Esperanto passages followed by a translation and notes.

The correlatives are highlighted both in the Esperanto and in the translated text so the student can see what is going on.

Some people learn by reading, and for those Cresswell's Esperanto (Teach Yourself) (Revised: 3rd Edition) and Wells's companion Concise Esperanto and English Dictionary: Esperanto-English, English-Esperanto (Teach Yourself Books) will be all they require to get a firm grip of the auxiliary language. Others need a more conversational path to learning and for me this volume performs a very useful service indeed.

The Kindle version is, so far as I have read, free from markup errors and typos.

I did detect a stylistic change from the way the same material might have been presented by my American Esperantist friends, but it is well-known that grammatical style is variant across the world when it comes to conversational Esperanto. The English, for example, use more "unnecessary" participles than anyone else (because English uses them more than other languages probably).

In any event, I think this book fills a useful niche for the beginning Esperantist, complementing Cresswell's book (which is a primary source).

I have a very open-minded approach to spirituality and personal development believing that we can grow and learn from all experience. I try and combine heart-felt spiritual devotion with wisdom: to let the love of God suffuse the highest perception. I learn and practise every day, from everyone I meet, from the teachings of the world religions, from my work, from family life and from being in nature. I worked in psychiatry in UK for six years, and then spent ten years volunteering in India, helping in a children’s home and then in the media department of a large charity. I love being a father to my children, singing, and service. I live in Germany, where I work in hospital care, bringing a smile to people in crisis.

Great book - witness a newer, enlightened you!
By Alan donald
I received this book as a gift and i think it was just the perfect gift. I mean....imagine a book that provides me clarity of thought and helps me understand myself. I loved this quote: our self is like a cinema screen that accepts all the contents of the various films that play on it, but remains untouched by what’s going on. How true! I loved the manner in which Mark goes to explain how and why we should remain like a child and stay positive all the time. Now this is something basic - something that we all know. However, the art lies in the manner it is explained in this book. It actually transforms you as a person and just on reading, your thought process changes. I have become so much positive - simply by reading. In fact, I read that chapter every day now! The concept of creating an enlightened thought is simply awesome.

The best part of the book is the manner in which it simplifies who you are and how you are different from your tricky ego. Affirmations are good too. I could actually go on and on....but I strongly recommend reading it to witness a newer, enlightened version of you!

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School (MIT Press), by Matthew Frederick

101 THINGS I LEARNED IN ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the design studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language the things they tend to make murky and abstruse. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation--from the basics of how to draw a line to the complexities of color theory--provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy and make concrete what too often is left nebulous and open-ended in the architecture curriculum.

Like all books in the popular and celebrated 101 THINGS I LEARNED book series, the lessons in 101 THINGS I LEARNED IN ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL utilize a unique two-page format, with a brief explanation and accompanying illustration. A lesson on how to draw a line is accompanied by examples of good and bad lines; a lesson on awkward floor level changes shows the television actor Dick Van Dyke in the midst of a pratfall; and a discussion of the proportional differences between traditional and modern buildings features a building split neatly in half between the two.

Written by an architect and instructor who well remembers the fog of his own student days, 101 THINGS I LEARNED IN ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL provides valuable guideposts for students navigating the architectural design studio and the rest of the architecture curriculum. Architecture graduates, from young designers to experienced practitioners, will turn to the book as well for inspiration and a guide back to basics when solving complex design problems.

I wish I had this book in Architecture School
By DCArchitect
I don't remember ever having a textbook for design studio - undoubtedly because this book hadn't been published yet. If it had, I would have had a wonderful little book that breaks down five years worth of architectural wisdom into 101 pages. I recommend reading it (about a ten minute read) before and a couple of times during the design process to refocus yourself. If nothing else, it should be required reading for first year students because it will teach you to speak architect. 'Parti' 'Figure/Ground' 'Positive Space' 'Negative Space' and all the other jargon architects tend to use are all defined here.

The book contains advice on both the technical and the intellectual. Hints for everything from lettering to post modern theory share page space with reminders as varied as 'design in section' to 'if you can't explain your design in terms your grandmother understands, you don't understand your own design.'

Nearly everything in the book is a hit. Even the cover is made from chip board. If you're a poor architecture student, scrape together some coffee money and get a copy. If you're already an architect, get a copy and remember a time before design problems were strip malls and warehouses.

Print version is excellent, but Kindle eBook is terrible
By Foxcat
The print version of this book is excellent. The layout is clean, elegant, easy-to-read, with illustrations and explanations facing each other on separate pages, and the content is insightful. This book is a model in clarity and conciseness. I own this book and love it.

Unfortunately, the eBook version's page layout is a failure. It has the same content, but the layout is completely messed up. For a given illustration, the *previous* explanation appears on the same page, without any visual indication that it is so. It is thus very hard to read and utterly confusing. I'm surprised the publisher messed up the layout of this book so badly. The font is also weirdly huge. I was so disappointed. Don't buy this eBook version until they fix the layout.

There are no jokes in the book.
By Daniel
Got this book for my wife as a gift after she graduated with her Master's in Architecture. She said she'd been planning on buying it for a while, so I surprised her with it and she loves it. I thought it was a book filled with jokes about architecture, but turns out, it is completely filled with actual useful architecture jargon and knowledge that she actually did learn. It serves as a great reference guide for her profession and a little reminder of all the hard work she put in to her degree. Makes a great gift or a handy tool for yourself.

The Toughest Indian in the World, by Sherman Alexie

A beloved American writer whose books are championed by critics and readers alike, Sherman Alexie has been hailed by Time as "one of the better new novelists, Indian or otherwise." Now his acclaimed new collection, The Toughest Indian in the World, which received universal praise in hardcover, is available in paperback. In these stories, we meet the kind of American Indians we rarely see in literature -- the kind who pay their bills, hold down jobs, fall in and out of love. A Spokane Indian journalist transplanted from the reservation to the city picks up a hitchhiker, a Lummi boxer looking to take on the toughest Indian in the world. A Spokane son waits for his diabetic father to come home from the hospital, tossing out the Hershey Kisses the father has hidden all over the house. An estranged interracial couple, separated in the midst of a traffic accident, rediscover their love for each other. A white drifter holds up an International House of Pancakes, demanding a dollar per customer and someone to love, and emerges with $42 and an overweight Indian he dubs Salmon Boy. Sherman Alexie's voice is one of remarkable passion, and these stories are love stories -- between parents and children, white people and Indians, movie stars and ordinary people. Witty, tender, and fierce, The Toughest Indian in the World is a virtuoso performance by one of the country's finest writers.

Amazon.com Review
Call Sherman Alexie any number of things--novelist, poet, filmmaker, thorn in the side of white liberalism--just don't call him "universal." Aside from his well-documented distaste for the word, its fuzziness misses the point. The Toughest Indian in the World, Alexie's second collection, succeeds as brilliantly as it does because of its particularity. These aren't stories about the Indian Condition; they're stories about Indians--urban and reservation, street fighters and yuppies, husbands and wives. "She understood that white people were eccentric and complicated and she only wanted to be understood as eccentric and complicated as well," thinks the Coeur d'Alene narrator of "Assimilation," who's married (unhappily) to a white man. And yet the issue of race has taken up permanent residence inside her house: the marriage survives, but it's love that's the most thorough assimilation of all.

Like The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, much of The Toughest Indian in the World combines deft psychological realism with the kind of narrative logic more commonly found in dreams. In "South by Southwest," a white drifter finds love on a "nonviolent killing spree" with an overweight Indian he calls Salmon Boy; in "Dear John Wayne," the cowboy actor falls in love with a young Spokane woman and proves himself a charmingly feminist hero. ("Oh, sons, you're just engaging in some harmless gender play," he tells his boys when he finds them trying on lipstick.) But for every bear hibernating on top of the Catholic church, there's also a GAP-wearing, Toyota-driving urban Indian on a quest for his roots. In both realist and surrealist modes, Alexie writes incantatory prose--as well as the kind of dialogue that makes even secondary characters leap into sudden focus: "'What?' asked Wonder Horse, as simple a question as could possibly be tendered, though he made it sound as if he'd asked Where's the tumor?"

Alexie is sometimes guilty of painting his white characters with too broad a brush. (Is any anthropologist truly as obtuse as the one in "Dear John Wayne"? Could any reader really want Mary Lynn, the narrator of "Assimilation," to stay with her boorish white husband?) Yet his kind of firebrand politics still has the power to shock. A harrowing fable about whites kidnapping Indians for the medical properties of their blood, "The Sin Eaters" could be dismissed as paranoid if it weren't so hauntingly written: On that morning, the sun rose and bloomed like blood in a glass syringe. The entire Spokane Indian Reservation and all of its people and places were clean and scrubbed. The Spokane River rose up from its bed like a man who had been healed and joyously wept all the way down to its confluence with the Columbia River. There was water everywhere: a thousand streams interrupted by makeshift waterfalls; small ponds hidden beneath a mask of thick fronds and anonymous blossoms; blankets of dew draped over the shoulders of isolated knolls. An entire civilization of insects lived in the mud puddle formed by one truck tire and a recent rain storm. The blades of grass, the narrow pine needles, and the stalks of roadside wheat were as sharp and bright as surgical tools. It's a hard story to read, and that's only right. The Toughest Indian in the World offers so many pleasures, who could deny it the power to disturb us as well? Funny, dreamlike, heartbreaking, angry--these are stories that could have been written by no one but Sherman Alexie. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
A prolific novelist, poet and screenplay writer, Alexie (Indian Killer; Reservation Blues) has been hailed as one of the best young writers of his generation. This dexterous second collection of stories contains what may be one of the best short fiction pieces of the year. "The Toughest Indian in the World" follows a young Spokane Indian who works at an all-white newspaper in Seattle and, in a forlorn attempt to reconnect with his roots, has his first homosexual experience with a tough Lummi fighter. It's a moving story that skillfully employs symbolism and flashbacks to construct an ending that is both uplifting and sorrowful. Many of the eight other stories in this collection also deal with urban Indians who are straddling two worlds: an intimate but indigent life on the reservation and an affluent but strange and sometimes hostile white middle-class existence. Their solutions to this double bind are rarely ordinary. "Assimilation" tells of a Coeur d'Alene woman who deliberately cheats on her white husband, only to rediscover her affection for him in the middle of a traffic jam. "Class" features a Spokane who sometimes tells white women he's Aztec, because "there were aphrodisiacal benefits from claiming to be descended from ritual cannibals." In "South by Southwest" a white man and a fat Indian nicknamed Salmon Boy, who declares he's not homosexual but does believe in love, set off on a nonviolent killing spree. Two tales, "Saint Junior" and "A Good Man," deal with marriage and death on the rez. The anger in these narratives is leavened by Alexie's acerbic wit and his obvious belief in the redemptive power of love. One exception, however, is "The Sin Eaters," an apocalyptic tale in which America's Indians are rounded up into massive underground prisons where soldiers force them to breed and give up their blood. Humorous, disturbing, formally inventive and heartwarming, Alexie's stories continually surprise, revealing him once again as a master of his craft. Agent, Nancy Cahoon, N. Stauffer Assoc. (May)

From Library Journal
Alexie may not be the toughest Indian in the world (in this stunning new collection, that honor goes to a Lummi fighter picked up by the narratorDor perhaps it's the durable narrator himself), but he definitely writes some of the toughest prose around. This work, Alexie's first collection since The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, offers nine stories rendered in muscular, unencumbered language that can deliver a shock like a good, hard punch. No, we shouldn't be much surprised when a character announces, "Indians just like to believe that white people will vanish, perhaps explode into smoke, if they are ignored enough times," but the delivery is so cool we are caught off guard. As the stories proceed from an Indian wife reconnecting with her husband after a calculated tryst to a lesbian couple (one Indian, one white) whose lives are complicated by a down-and-out male friend to an Indian father happy (is he really?) that his son has a good life with a white stepfather, Alexie moves in for the kill, consistently surprising us with stories that are neither sentimental nor angry but far more emotionally complex. Highly recommended.DBarbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"

I almost cried a few times and I laughed a lot
By Debra Garfinkle
For a story about an impoverished teen on an Indian reservation who has an alcoholic father and faces bullies and racism and the deaths of several close relatives, I sure laughed a lot. I loved the written humor and the wonderful cartoons throughout the book, as well as learning something about life on a reservation. I finished this fast-paced book in two days and was sorry to see it end. This is one of my favorite young adult novels of 2007.

Richie's Picks: THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN
By N. S.
"Mr. President you ought to know that this nation is more a 'Tale of Two Cities' than it is just a 'Shining City on a Hill.' "
-- Mario Cuomo, 1984 National Democratic Convention Keynote Address

"It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you're poor because you're stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you're stupid and ugly because you're Indian. And because you're Indian you start believing you're destined to be poor. It's an ugly circle and there's nothing you can do about it.

So opines high school student and sometime cartoonist Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, who is despondent as his father prepares to shoot Arnold's suffering dog because there is no money to pay for a veterinarian's services. But a math teacher -- whose nose is broken when Arnold, in his frustration, angrily throws his generations-old math book --endeavors to change Arnold's sense of helplessness:

" 'You can't give up. You won't give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up.'
"I didn't know what he was talking about. Or maybe I just didn't want to know.
"Jeez, it was a lot of pressure to put on a kid. I was carrying the burden of my race, you know? I was going to get a bad back from it.
" 'If you stay on this rez,' Mr. P said, 'they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.'
" 'I don't want to fight anybody.' I said.
" 'You've been fighting since you were born,' he said. 'You fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.'
"I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply hope by hope.
" 'Where is hope?' I asked. 'Who has hope?'
" 'Son,' Mr. P said. 'You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad reservation.' "

I'd certainly heard of Sherman Alexie. Back in my bookstore days, a young college student with whom I worked spoke of him as a god. But I'd never read any of Alexie's books since he hadn't yet written anything for children or YAs.

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN is a semi-autobiographical tale by Sherman Alexie, written for teen readers, that is in turns wacked-out, funny, heartbreaking, and jubilant. It is the story of an Indian kid who has survived a precarious infancy and is growing up on a reservation outside Spokane. It is a powerful story of friendship between two teenage guys who have grown up together on the reservation. It is the story of Arnold's journey after he is persuaded by the math teacher to escape the rez school and transfer to a high school 22 miles away.

And it is a tale of two cities.

"So what was I doing in Reardan, whose mascot was an Indian, thereby making me the only other Indian in town?"

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN portrays Arnold's struggle through that ninth grade school year to succeed at the high school in Reardan, to which he often has to walk and/or hitch. It could be that Arnold's greatest struggle involves the conflict and guilt that comes from living among the Indian kids and grown-ups he's seemingly left behind on the reservation in order to attain that success.

Arnold's humorous and telling drawings (thanks to artist Ellen Forney), which are "taped" into the diary, significantly bolster the book's boy-charm and permit us to see, in a second dimension, Arnold's view of his world.

"My head was so big that little Indian skulls orbited around it. Some of the kids called me Orbit. And other kids just called me Globe. The bullies would pick me up, spin me in circles, put their finger down on my skull, and say, 'I want to go there'."

I loved hanging out in Arnold World! Sherman Alexie and his quirky, in-your-face, first-person tale of contemporary life on and off the reservation are both important and extremely welcome additions to the world of young adult literature.

The Absolutely True Review of a Part-Time Teacher
By LauraLewWho
It seems that this book is very polarizing. This appears to be due to its treatment of sensitive issues surrounding religion and faith, race, disability, and debates raging around abuse and neglect, among other subjects.

Having taught high schoolers and college students, I found this book to be an accurate representation of the way young people perceive and relate to the world around them. Alexie touches on serious subjects, like race, gender, class, discrimination, disability, death, and family, simultaneously with his teenaged narrator's wit and humor, particularly in Ellen Forney's cartoons and caricatures. While some of this humor is crass, it is not inappropriate; nor is it any different from the way young people talk amongst themselves.

While I thought this novel could have spent more time dissecting and analyzing all of these issues (hence the lower rating), I must disagree with assessments that this subject matter is inappropriate or lascivious for middle and high schoolers. While it may not be appropriate for every pre-teen and teen to read, it is not pornographic or tasteless. Alexie, through his narrator, Junior, discusses what it means to be a young adult caught between two worlds. He does so in a way that does not omit, censor or make light of the less savory elements of puberty: his perceptions are honest and accurate. He and his friends communicate and experience life in a way that is not always "appropriate;" they discuss alcoholism, teen sexuality and disability in the same way that teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world do: as seriously as possible, and as humorously as possible when seriousness fails.

It is doing a disservice to teens to paint a picture of life that is always appropriate; life is not always appropriate. When your family struggles with alcoholism and poverty, or your loved ones die, or your friends deal with eating disorders or physical ailments they are unable to control, or your future, and that of those around you, is limited by forces beyond your control, life is not appropriate. This novel attempts to deal with the realities of life in a way that is imperfect and developing, but relatable and real despite all that.
